Help us deliver the best infant feeding support to women who birth at Warrington Hospital.  

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Maternity Services at Warrington and Halton Hospital NHS Trust. We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who are passionate about infant feeding.

As an infant feeding peer support worker at WHH,  you will be based on our mixed antenatal and postnatal ward, providing hands-on infant feeding support. You will work closely with the infant feeding specialist midwife, peer support workers, midwives and maternity support workers to ensure that women are provided with the best possible start to their infant feeding journey and are well prepared for discharge home. 

You will be required to possess an NVQ Level 3 in care and have experience in infant feeding to ensure our women and babies receive the highest quality of care. Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as an integral part of our infant feeding team to deliver high quality, family-centred support to the population of Warrington & Halton.  As we work towards our Level 2 BFI Accreditation, the post holder will work in collaboration with the infant feeding specialist midwife to implement & uphold the UNICEF BFI standards on the combined antenatal and postnatal ward. They will deliver evidence-based infant feeding support and have meaningful feeding conversations in both the antenatal and postnatal period. The post holder will work with the infant feeding lead to increase breastfeeding initiation rates, by promoting breastfeeding in the antenatal period and providing excellent hands-on infant feeding support on the postnatal ward. The role will include the gathering of information on needs and the views of women, retrieving & managing data and information.

The post holder will be willing to undertake training courses to enhance their existing knowledge. They will strive to support our families with the most complex feeding needs and reduce the impact of the biggest risk factors for feeding related issues and readmission. The post holder will be based on the postnatal ward and will provide specialist support to midwives, women and families to ensure a successful start to an infant feeding journey. The post holder will comply with the Warrington & Halton Hospitals NHS Trust infant feeding guidelines and policies.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ 3 in Health and Social care, Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support, or equivalent health care related qualifications
  • Higher breastfeeding training or appropriate clinical experience
Desirable criteria
  • GCSE English Language and Maths A to C or 4 -9 or functional skills or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in an infant feeding role
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an NHS hospital setting

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of the UNICEF BFI initiative
  • Understanding of the mechanism of breastfeeding and physiology
  • Understanding of how to support parents to safely formula feed
  • Knowledge of local, national and global strategies relevant to infant feeding

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Effective communication skills and experience of supporting service users in their infant feeding choices
  • Effective time management skills and able to work both independently and in a team
  • Confident in using a variety of IT systems
