Job overview
We are looking to recruit a dynamic nurse with excellent clinical nursing skills, to deliver a high-quality service to patients attending the pre-operative assessment unit.
We are looking for a nurse who has vision and passion to work within our nursing team to provide the best possible care for our patients.
The successful applicant will be a motivated and enthusiastic individual with significant post-registration clinical experience within the area of pre-operative assessment or equivalent general adult surgical experience.
Applicants will need to have a clear understanding of nursing quality and be able to assure excellence in clinical care. Applicants must have the relevant experience and knowledge of care delivery appropriate to this patient group, be creative, enthusiastic, motivated and have excellent communication skills. The ability to work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team is essential, together with excellent communication skills.
Hours per week: 37.5 (to be worked over 3 long days)
Main duties of the job
The Pre-Operative Assessment Service is nurse led and therefore willingness to undertake clinical examination (heart and chest) and working towards ECG interpretation are necessary for this role.
Other duties include:
- assessing patients, ensuring the smooth running of clinics, reviewing investigation results and liaising with other members of the multi-disciplinary.
You will support the Lead pre-operative nurse assessor with training and developing of staff and you will have an opportunity to shadow specialty teams for your learning and development.
The department will support new members of staff with an induction programme which includes working with specialist nurses and AHPs, the surgical and anaesthetic teams and the wider MDT team.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- First level registered Nurse/AHP (Allied Health Professions)
- Current NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) /HCPC (Health and Care Professional Council) registration
- Level 7 (masters) module in clinical assessment and diagnostics or working towards this or be prepared to study at this level.
- Evidence of ongoing CPD (Continuing Professional Development)
Desirable criteria
- Mentoring course
- Communication or counselling skills training
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of recent NHS legislation, recommendations
- Awareness of the national and local priorities and changing trends in specialist area
- Evidence of knowledge within specialist area of surgery, anaesthetics, pre-operative assessment
