The Cheshire & Merseyside Surgical Centre will provide state-of-the-art clinical areas to support patient care. These include two theatres covering ophthalmology, orthopaedics, pain, ENT, dermatology, and general surgery all under local anaesthetic.

Main duties of the job

To manage and lead a specialist team in a designated clinical area; contributing to the strategic and operational management of the surgical hub.  Delivering optimal patient care and providing an effective and efficient high quality service.

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a full range of local hospital and community services for people across East Cheshire (population 399K) and West Cheshire and Chester boroughs (population 357K).

The Trust provides high quality planned and unplanned/emergency care, cardiac and critical care as well as child health, maternity services, and intermediate care across our sites at Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsible for a designated area, contributing to the strategic and operational management of the surgical hub; ensuring effective and efficient utilisation of resources and staff members to provide a quality service.

 

Deputise for the Service Manager as required and support in the development, innovation and expansion of the service(s) within the department. 

 

Effectively manage and co-ordinate the running of the department staff and specialties to maintain effective and efficient multidisciplinary team-working; ensuring control mechanisms are in place to create safe working practices. 

 

Deliver services within financial constraints to achieve optimum patient care. Support the Service Manager with achieving financial savings identified through the “Cost Improvement Process”. To act as an authorised signatory for staff time sheets, including bank and agency staff.

 

Responsible and accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating high quality patient care within specialist area of practice, through implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practice.

 

Act as a specialist resource within the clinical area, sharing clinical expertise with peers and  surgical hub personnel.

 

Take responsibility for effective and efficient utilisation use of resources and stock, within agreed budgets; including responsibility for maintaining stock levels within specialist area. 

 

Ensure effective communication with other professionals and groups within the Trust as well as external agencies.

 

To be responsible for policy and service development through the implementation of protocols for practice and pathways.

 

Lead and support a multidisciplinary team by actively participating in the delivery of high quality patient care.

 

Monitor and maintain provision of care to the highest standard.

 

Manage risks, accidents, and incidents in accordance with Trust policy.

 

Promote Clinical Governance and Clinical Effectiveness within the team to ensure an understanding of how this affects day to day activity within the department, through audit and research, ensuring all our practices are evidence based.

 

Respond to complaints and assist in their resolution within the Trust’s complaints handling framework.

Ensure compliance with Trust policies, procedures and guidelines for self and others, by taking action/alerting senior management team if practice appears to contravene policy, or if concerned about any aspect of patient care. 

 

Act as a role model by demonstrating leadership and expertise, and by maintaining credibility within the Division, the wider health care community and external agencies, ensuring a positive image of the Trust is maintained.

 

Create an environment conducive to change, participating in identification, development and review of guidelines and standards of care.

 

Manage staff absence in conjunction with the Service Manager and Human Resources.

 

To deal with staff grievances and disciplinary matters in the first instance, ensuring that they are dealt with in accordance with Trust Policies.

 

Develop Team Leaders to provide effective leadership by demonstrating a high level of clinical expertise to support staff, and promote their development.

 

Manage the recruitment and selection of staff, within specialities, supported by other  department staff. Promote a healthy, safe and secure working environment, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, maintaining accurate documentation and reporting any concerns.

 

Work with the Service Manager to identify and assist the professional education, training and development needs of the staff and facilitate the achievement of these objectives through staff appraisal.  Support the development of action plans to ensure training and development needs of staff members are met.

 

Maintain specialist level of expertise through post registration study, demonstrating continuing professional development.

 

Maintain professional registration and act at all times within relevant code of conduct.
