Job overview

**This position is open to staff working at the Trust in the ‘ECT Family’ this includes current East Cheshire NHS Trust employees, both NHSP and ECT bank staff, ISS staff and volunteers at the Trust. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from applicants not listed within these groups.**

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join our team as a UGI Cancer Patient Navigator.

The successful candidate will support the Cancer Tumour Site Team to facilitate the smooth running of the patient journey, by ensuring that the cancer pathways are coordinated, streamlined and all processes revolve around the patient and their individual needs.

The Cancer Navigator’s will be responsible for communicating with patients and relevant departments to ensure all investigations are performed in a timely manner; either at the start of the pathway or during follow up.  Part of the role will be ensuring the personalised care agenda is embedded into the service. The post holder will also assist the Cancer Nurses with their daily workload as well as helping with data collection.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working with or supporting patients or clients with complex needs, a good understanding of cancer and advanced communication skills. 

 Hours per week: 37.5

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an integral part of the Specialist Cancer Care Team, who assists, supports and co-ordinates the pathway for patients through the Cancer Care Pathway. A large part of the role is providing administrative and coordination support to patients, families, consultants, cancer nurse specialists and other staff involved in the cancer pathway. The successful applicant will ensure the efficient channelling and close co-ordination of the patients pathway ensuring robust communication between medical staff, GPs, patients, relatives, members of the public and other disciplines within the Trust and close liaison with the community staff and oncology teams.

The post holder will demonstrate excellent organisational skills, must be flexible in approach, able to exercise initiative and demonstrate a consistently high standard of professionalism, being aware of the need for confidentiality and integrity. The post holder will have excellent communication skills and be willing to undertake on-going training and development. In addition, the post holder will be able to signpost patients and carers to the relevant sources of support and information appropriate to their needs.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good general education with GCSE English and Mathemetics
  • Level 3 Health or social care qualification (eg. NVQ or similar)
  • ECDL or equivalent experience

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Efficient in the use of Microsoft Word for Windows, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and internet
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and non-verbally on a daily basis with people at all levels.
  • Practical problems solving skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of relevant cancer treatments, interventions and terminology.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of contact with patients who have cancer.
  • Able to prioritise work and work of others.
  • Able to use own initiative and work without supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Medical secretarial experience

  • Ability to work flexibly dependant on the needs of the service.
