We are seeking enthusiastic and dynamic Nurse or Midwives to join our highly motivated Maternity team at The Countess of Chester. This is an exciting opportunity to provide a high- quality immunisation service to pregnant women and BCG vaccinations for new-borns birthed at The Countess of Chester.
We are committed to providing a safe and positive experience to our women, while recognising that staff are our greatest asset. We engage with our staff at all levels to discuss ideas to improve our care, while providing staff development opportunities.
We are excited to announce we are working on plans for our new maternity unit which is planned to open in 2025. We have 2300 births per year, our Maternity Service includes the following:
- An alongside midwifery unit
- An 8 bed consultant led obstetric Unit
- A Community midwifery service
- A Fetal Medicine Service inc. preterm clinics
- A 27 bed antenatal and postnatal ward providing 4 transitional care beds
- Specialist midwives within Bereavement, Infant Feeding, Perinatal Mental Health Midwife, Fetal Services, saving babies lives, fetal monitoring and practice development.
- Close relationship with our local Maternity Voice Partnership
Main duties of the job
- To contribute to the delivery of a high-quality antenatal and newborn BCG immunisation service to pregnant women booked to birth their baby at The Countess of Chester Hospital.
- To increase the uptake of influenza, pertussis, RSV, and other necessary immunisations by pregnant women.
- To support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the antenatal immunisation programme delivery.
- To provide advice and information about immunisation to educate staff, antenatal women/ birthing people, and other stakeholders.
- To take a woman-centred and public health approach to improve health and tackle inequalities.
- Always Work within the nursing and midwifery council (NMC) code of professional conduct.
- Undertake work they have been assessed as competent to do.
Working for our organisation
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:
- The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
- Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
- Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.
The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £27.50 (standard) or £55.50 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first three months of employment.

Qualification
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse or Midwife
- Professional/clinical knowledge acquired through midwifery training to degree/ diploma level plus preceptorship or equivalent
- Current NMC Registration 12 months post registration experience
- Additional specialist training or knowledge to diploma level or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Qualified to administer vaccinations to adults
- Qualified to administer BCG vaccinations to babies
Knowledge and Experience
