Job overview

We are looking for a skilled competent practitioner (with NMC or HCPC registration - Nurse/ODP) to cover maternity leave in a busy elective theatre department, for the candidate to primarily be supporting orthopaedics. However, the successful candidate will additionally support urology, colorectal, general and breast surgeries in Prince Philip Hospital. 

The candidate would be expected to support the departmental leads in maintaining an efficient and effective service, delivering safe patient care within the perioperative environment that promotes a responsive approach to changing health care needs.

This post combines clinical peri operative practice with the leadership responsibilities of day-to-day shift coordination. You will provide supervisory management and leadership skills and be motivated towards self-development in both management and leadership studies.

You will be expected to lead on a day-to-day basis the running of specialist clinical area/ department, and provide supervisory management and leadership skills, supporting the multidisciplinary theatre team and patient in a surgical environment which is complex and pressurised.

At this level the post holder is expected to work as a skilled practitioner working autonomously to support other colleagues to co-ordinate the clinical areas and to provide specialised knowledge ensuring the maintenance and development of a skilled nursing /Practitioner workforce.

Person specification

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • RGN Level 1 or Registered Operating Departmental Practitioner
  • Specific clinical training/education related to perioperative care, evidence of continued professional development to postgraduate diploma level
  • Evidence of Continued professional development to postgraduate diploma level
  • Expanded clinical nursing skills
  • Willing to undertake an in-house leadership development programme in next two years
  • Willing to undertake other training essential to role
Desirable criteria
  • BSc (in health related subject) / willing to work toward
  • Certificate/diploma in orthopaedic or trauma nursing
  • Teaching and Assessing Module

Experience
