Main duties of the job

  • Clinical – demonstrate critical understanding of their broadened level of responsibility and autonomy and their own limits of competence and Scope of Practice.
  • Management and Leadership – able to role model effective leadership behaviours, show resilience and manage effective governance strategies, which support the agenda for change within the Trust.
  •  Education and Training – able to identify, support and develop learning interventions for both self and team members.
  • Audit and Research – to look at areas for quality improvements to care, use audit processes and both formal and informal research methods to improve service delivery
  • Additional areas:
    • Financial – ensure considered cost appraisal when requesting or referring for investigations, ordering stores or equipment, booking training/courses or when involved in service development and recruitment activities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role holder will be required to work across these four pillars of practice, with a view to spending their time as indicated below.  This will be governed by the use of Job Planning processes and will be the responsibility of the role holder in cooperation with the Clinical Lead and roster coordinator to record accurately planned and actual time completed on each area. 

Contracted Working Hours split:

80% of contracted hours will be clinically focused on direct patient care.

The remaining 20% of contracted hours with be allocated to supporting professional actives (SPA) split between:

  • Management and Leadership - of junior multidisciplinary staff.
  • Education and Training – maintaining own continued professional development (CPD), mandatory training/compliance and providing training and education to other staff within Directorate.
  • Audit and Research – of own practice and that of junior staff. Audit of departmental pathways and researching evidence-based medicine.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse or HCPC Registered Paramedic or Physiotherapist.
  • Master’s Degree in Advanced Clinical Practice (or in certain circumstances has completed Health Education England (HEE) ACP ePortfolio).
  • Independent Prescriber (V300).
  • Safeguarding Adults (level 3).
  • Safeguarding Children (level 3)
  • IR(ME)R certificate.
  • Advanced Life Support provider (ALS) – or equivalent
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support provider (APLS) – or equivalent
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support provider (ATLS) – or equivalent
  • Immediate Life Support provider (ILS)
  • Paediatric Immediate Life Support provider (PILS)
  • Current Portfolio/ePortfolio of practice evidence
Desirable criteria
  • Completed or working toward accreditation/credentialing with The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM)
  • Generic Instructor Course (GIC) for the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) or Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG)
  • Leadership qualification
  • Teaching / Assessment and mentoring qualification
  • Have Ultrasound Level 1 qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Has completed a specific ACP trainee programme.
  • Has >5yrs speciality experience working at a senior level within Emergency, Urgent or Acute Care setting.
  • Competent in the clinical assessment and management of all patient groups.
  • Able to role model and lead whilst working independently and within a team.
Desirable criteria
  • Have had line management experience.
  • Experience of teaching at informal and formal level.
  • Change management experience.
  • Participated in audit and developed service improvement strategies.
  • Has had appraisal and recruitment training.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and expertise of the four pillars of Advanced Practice.
  • Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice.
  • Effective verbal and non-verbal communication across the age and acuity spectrum at all levels.
  • Awareness of local and national issues relating to healthcare provision.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Competent in 12 lead ECG interpretation.
  • Competent to interpretation of clinical diagnostics such as blood results and make appropriate plan and intervention including blood gasses.
  • Competent to interpret plain radiographs / X-rays and make appropriate clinical interventions from diagnostics.
  • Has evidence of a recently undertaken audit of own practice and implemented changes where required.
Desirable criteria
  • Competent to interpret Computerised Tomography (CT) images.
  • Experience of working on a Trust committee or group.
  • Working knowledge of Human Resource (HR) policies.

  • Can undertake venepuncture, cannulation.
  • Can undertake intraosseous (IO) access.
  • Can identify critical Limb injuries and know how to manage including dislocations and those needing manipulation.
  • Has good understanding on pain management and methods to reduce pain (e.g., analgesia, slings, cold compress, immobilisation etc).
Desirable criteria
  • Can insert Longlines/Midlines with ultrasound guidance.

Other

Essential criteria
  • Portfolio of evidence with evidence of Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS).
  • Experience with using Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrates understanding of relevant national strategy/policy and how to relate this to the service.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working with Symphony IT system and or system one.
