Job overview

We are excited to advertise our Deputy Ward Manager position for our 16-bed mixed Adult Inpatient Recovery Ward (Mulberry 3) on our Fulbourn site in Cambridge with good transport links and free parking.

Our Recovery Ward is part of our innovative and ambitious model of care, known as the 3-3-3 model. Our three wards work collaboratively to enable patients to access the right care at the right time. We have our Acute Assessment Unit (Mulberry 1), where patients stay up to 3 days, our Treatment ward (Mulberry 2), where patients stay up to 3 weeks and our Recovery Unit (Mulberry 3), where patients stay up to 3 months.

Our Mulberry 3 ward provides care for our local population experiencing serious mental illness. We are looking for someone with a commitment to teamwork, a sense of accountability, and an ability to work under pressure.

Main duties of the job

As a Deputy Ward Manager you will be responsible for the provision of quality evidence-based nursing advice, support, and care for service users with mental and physical health needs and to their carers within a multidisciplinary setting. You will be responsible for leading on the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.

You will also be responsible for identifying and contributing to the training needs of junior registered and unregistered staff and ensure that issues of equality, diversity and rights are dealt with in accordance with good practice and legislation. You will ensure that effective communication pathways exist, and that they act within their sphere of responsibility, leading the night shift in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Specialist, Ward Manager or the designated deputy.

  1. To be responsible for supervising & participating in the role of named nurse in relation to care planning within the clinical area.
  2. To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the evidence based care required, including health promotion for a named service user/group ensuring it meets Trust
  3. To participate in the setting of quality standards, including the monitoring and reviewing in line with current clinical guidance practice and policy. Utilising the data available such as learning from incidences and
  4. To ensure the post holder understands and meets their professional role and responsibilities under the Care Programme
  5. To ensure that the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2007 are observed, adhered to and
  6. To be responsible for the promotion of carer and service user involvement within the service and for its provision. To encourage recovery, discovery and independence, taking into account risk assessment and
  7. To be responsible for establishing therapeutic relationships with service users and the implementation of evidence based therapeutic interventions with appropriate boundaries in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Councils professional code of conduct.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Mental Health (RNMH) or Registered Nurse Learning Disability (RNLD)
  • NMC registration
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Mentor qualification / ENB 998 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualification related to ward specialism
  • Additional qualification for specialism

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of inpatient services and working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Basic training in the Mental Capacity Act
  • Experience of providing mentorship
  • Experience of dealing with service users with complex mental health needs
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of undertaking group work
  • Experience of developing service user and carer involvement
  • Experience relating to ward specialism
  • Lived experience of mental health

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Effective communication skills both verbally and written, including IT literacy (MS Office).
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with staff across a wide range of professional and managerial groups
  • Ability to use own initiative, to enable contribution to a multidisciplinary team approach

Knowledge and Understanding

Essential criteria
  • Thorough understanding of care planning and the Care Programme Approach (where appropriate)
  • Understanding of the legislation relating to care including - Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Act, Children’s Act, Equality Act 2010, Health and Safety Act and the Data Protection Act
