An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 6 staff nurse to join the dynamic and supportive team in our local neonatal unit at MKUH NHS Foundation Trust.

The Neonatal Unit is a 16 bedded neonatal unit caring for babies from 27 weeks gestation, we provide 5 intensive care/high dependency cots and 11 special care cots.. We are part of the Thames Valley and Wessex Neonatal Network and the Bedford, Luton and Milton Keynes (BLMK) Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) and work closely with our colleagues in our neighbouring units to provide high quality care.

Across the Neonatal Unit we continually strive, as a multi-disciplinary team, to offer high quality, evidenced based and holistic care to all of our patients. We believe that we have much to offer any candidate who joins our team.

To work in collaboratively with the MDT to provide the highest standard of clinical nursing care to premature infants through multidisciplinary working and evidence-based practice.

To deliver high quality patient care on a daily basis. The post holder should be knowledgeable in all areas of nursing care including resuscitation and stabilisation, admission to discharge, which facilitates clinical practice development. They will actively support the Senior Sisters, ensuring the effective running of the unit on a daily basis.

We require enthusiastic, caring and motivated individuals to join our team as staff nurses to provide dynamic, high quality nursing care to our Babies and their families. We work closely with our maternity and paediatric colleagues and offer the option of to be part of a rotational programme between the neonatal, paediatric wards and paediatric ED.

As a Unit we have an active preceptorship and an exciting education programme, and we encourage all staff to undertake internal and external courses to ensure their continued development.

Opportunities include internal and external study days and University based courses such as Mentorship, Qualification in speciality. With opportunities to undertake research, audit and governance projects.

Professional

  • To undertake managerial responsibility for a team of nurses and support staff, providing high quality 24 hour patient care in the most efficient and safe manner in accordance with Divisional and Trust policies and guidelines, in the absence of Band 7/Matron. 
  • To undertake the supervision and direction of junior staff, nursing support workers and learners. 

Clinical 

  • To demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge and practice and act as a role model at all times. 
  • In the absence of the Lead Nurse, maintain clinical leadership, working closely with the multidisciplinary team. 

Management 

  • To provide professional leadership of the nursing team on a shift by shift basis, ensuring appropriate staff allocation and skill-mix, managing of cot availability and service provision. 
  • To establish and maintain effective communication channels within and outside the department by: Promoting teamwork and inter-personal relationships and encouraging others in the decision making process and attend regular unit meetings and participating in Divisional Directorate forums as required

Education 

  • Demonstrate responsibility for professional development 
  • To be responsible for continuing assessment of performance and the identification of development needs of the team members 

Personnel 

  • To participate in the appointment of staff within the nursing team. 
  • To assist the Band 7 team in the staff personal development reviews and personal development (PD and PDP).
