Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide advice, information, and support for those directly contacting the screening centre following a positive FOBt/ within the Lynch Screening programme. Be responsible for care delivery to patients throughout the county, identified by the screening programme and will meet the needs of patients arising as a result of:

Having been called in for scoping following a positive faecal occult blood test or invited via the Lynch screening programme.

Nurse – Patient relationship

Demonstrates and establishes a relationship of Trust with patients, carers, and families

Demonstrates expertise when dealing with complex patients.

Management of patient health/illness status

To act as an expert practitioner in the management of patient illness, demonstrating advanced clinical skills and knowledge to professional staff and patients

To communicate the patients' health status using appropriate terminology, format, and technology and discuss treatment options available.

Education

Identifies the ongoing training and educational needs of patients, their carers, and their families about the prevention, treatment, and management of bowel screening

To provide guidance and advice to promote health, reduce risk factions, and prevent disease disability

Professional role

To analyse and interpret National recommendations, such as NSF / NICE guidance and formulate action plans to achieve compliance from a nursing perspective

Interpret the impact of public health data/information in evaluating patients' needs, patterns of disease, and effectiveness of interventions/programme of care

Operational

Demonstrates expert skills and knowledge in the assessment, planning, and development of the bowel screening service

Ensure an efficient value for money and seamless service in bowel screening is provided for patients

Knowledge of clinical governance, risk management, valid consent, and withdrawal of consent

Desirable criteria

Completed JMU Specialist Screening Practitioner Course
Knowledge of the Bowel Cancer/ Lynch Screening Programme

Experience

Essential criteria

Experience in acute setting.
Experience in undertaking nurse-led clinics.

Desirable criteria

Experience in developing and influencing changing clinical practice.
Significant experience in an endoscopy unit, assessment unit, or colorectal/ oncology specialist practice equivalent.

Purpose of the job/about the role

Dementia UK has entered into an exciting three-year corporate partnership with a national partner. As a key component of this initiative, we will establish face-to-face Admiral Nurse clinics across the UK. This new team will bring Admiral Nursing to high street locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As part of the national Clinics Programme Team, you will provide in-person biopsychosocial support and advice, sharing your specialist dementia nursing expertise to help families manage the complexities of the condition. Your focus will be on supporting family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist dementia guidance in areas of the UK where Admiral Nurse services are currently unavailable, bringing a much-needed service directly to local communities. Throughout your work, you will consistently promote Admiral Nursing and a family-centred approach to dementia care.

You will receive full support with your continuous professional development from the Admiral Nurse Academy.

As this unique nursing role offers you the opportunity to travel across the country, and will include overnight stays, flexibility is essential. When not delivering face-to-face clinics, you will provide support on our Helpline, working from home.

Admiral Nurse – Delivered Services

Join our Delivered Services team as an Admiral Nurse and bring your specialist dementia nursing expertise to support family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist advice. You’ll be a key member of our team, providing biopsychosocial support through our National Dementia Helpline and Virtual Clinic appointments.

In addition to your core responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to lead and support other clinical projects across the charity, benefit from monthly clinical supervision, and participate in a range of learning opportunities to support your ongoing professional development.

As an Admiral Nurse, you’ll be responsible for providing nursing support and expertise, offering practical guidance to colleagues, the general public, those with dementia, and others in supporting family and relationship-centered approaches to dementia care. You’ll also lead and coordinate shifts as required, providing clinical supervision to others and assist with the development, evaluation, audit of the service, carer and supporters in different settings.

To be successful in this position, you’ll need to be an active Registered Nurse on the NMC register with a post-registration qualification or training in dementia care or a relevant subject. You will have significant experience of practicing as an Admiral Nurse or dementia specialist nurse and previously worked with people who have dementia and their family, carer and supporters in different settings.

Strong communication skills are essential, as is a proven track record of providing high standards of clinical leadership and specialist nursing support. You should be adept at providing clinical advice, clinical supervision, and advocating for family carers.
