Job overview

The post holder will provide direct support to the Maternity Services by coordinating compliance with audit, guidelines, all regulatory, statutory and good practice governance requirements, including Ockenden, NHS Resolution Maternity and Perinatal Incentive Scheme (MIS) and the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) 5 core domains and standards, and provide evidence of such compliance for internal and external assurance.

The postholder will work closely with the Maternity Compliance and Assurance Lead, Lead Midwife for Governance and Quality, Obstetric Governance Lead, Obstetric Audit Lead, Director of Midwifery, Head of Midwifery and Consultant Midwife.

The  postholder will lead in key areas including audit, quality improvement, clinical guidelines and support and monitor actions from these workstreams.

Main duties of the job

·        To work with the clinical team and governance team to coordinate and gather the evidence required to demonstrate compliance with the elements of the Maternity and Perinatal Incentive Scheme (MIS).

·        Plan and organise complex activities or programmes of work to coordinate, implement, deliver and provide assurance against national and local standards.

·        Work in collaboration with the guideline and audit Leads to monitor audit and guidelines compliance, the implementation of actions from audits, QI projects, incidents and perinatal mortality reviews and to monitor progress against local and national standards.

·        Support the embedding of a culture of continuous quality improvement and assurance across all services.    

·        Report to the clinical governance team any information received from other external agencies in relation to national maternity standards.

·        Support the maternity escalation rota as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·        Provide clear and consistent leadership to the clinical governance support staff.

·        Influence and nurture positive attitudes and behaviours within the team and wider multidisciplinary team.

·        Provide specialist knowledge across a range of governance and assurance procedures and processes, particularly in relation to MIS, Ockenden and CQC.

·        Ability to lead and influence change.

·        Act as a resource for staff to access and raise awareness of national and local policies that will impact upon them and affect the delivery of patient care.

·        Assist all members of the clinical governance support team to understand and achieve their work streams using a continuous assessment process.

·        Provide timely accurate reports to the division.

·        Communicate with key personnel leads to maximise the potential for successful implementation of evidence-based guidelines reflecting national standards and recommendations.

·        Know and influence the function of committees that professionally or managerially affect the provision of maternity services.

·        Use every opportunity to facilitate teaching, learning and reflection in the clinical area

·        Introduce new ways of working if applicable.

 

Person specification

Education, Qualification & Training

Essential criteria
  • NMC registration/ Allied Health Professional or other relevant qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and its application
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma / Degree level

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience at Band 6 or equivalent
  • Understanding of clinical governance, patient safety and regulation
Desirable criteria
  • Management of Change process / service development

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of maternity/patient safety issues in the wider context of the NHS
  • Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of maternity
  • Capable of providing leadership to the team
  • Ability to undertake standard setting
  • Knowledge of responsibilities under the Health and Safety Act 1974
  • If a registrant - Knowledge of NMC Code of Conduct, Guidelines and Professional Practice and Midwives Rules
  • Experience of Child Protection issues
