Job overview
This is a rotational post and the post holder is required to work in all areas within the Maternity Services providing antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. The post holder will participate in quality improvements, and service developments.
The post holder will have an annual appraisal and undertake continuing professional development. It is expected that midwives work autonomously within the Trust guidelines and sphere of professional practice.
Main duties of the job
Promote continuity of care to provide a high standard of midwifery care to mother and baby and to provide help and support to the family unit.
Actively promote the concept of total holistic woman centred care within the maternity services offering choice to women regarding place of birth.
Is designated to take charge regularly of the Ward/Department in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility.
Is expected to take part in the appraisal process, to supervise, mentor and provide preceptorship for junior staff.
Is able and expected to teach, lead and manage qualified and other staff, including students and student midwives.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Essential criteria
- Registered Midwife
- ENB 997/MSPP
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of Further Study
- NVQ assessor
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Experience as a preceptor Midwife
- Ability to be a mentor to student midwives/nurses/MCA’s
- Completion of mentor assessor workshops
Desirable criteria
- Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively within it
SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
- Professional appearance and behaviour
- Clinical skills, in particular: Suturing Cannulation Supervision of epidural infusion
- Good communicator both verbally and in writing
- Ability to write clearly and legibly in English
- Ability to work on own initiative and mange own time
- Knowledge of evidence informed and research based practice
- Willing to undertake further study
- Knowledge of NMC Code of Conduct, Guidelines and Professional Practice
- Awareness and knowledge of vulnerable adult and child Protection issues
- Good previous attendance record
- Flexible approach to working hours and practices
- Satisfactory enhanced DBS with check against vulnerable groups barred lists
