Band 6 Research Nurse - Surgery Team.

Come and join us!  We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Research Nurse to join our Surgical Research Team at Southmead Hospital.  Our surgical research team specialises in Colorectal, UGI, and Vascular Surgery. The primary focus of this position will be on conducting Vascular research, along with some emergency surgery and theatre studies. 

In this role, your responsibilities will include conducting feasibility assessments, setting up studies, recruiting participants, and managing follow-ups; you will be supported by our senior research nurse throughout these processes. We are seeking qualified nurses with current NMC registration in the UK. Candidates should have a keen interest in surgery and, preferably, experience in clinical research or a strong aspiration to work in this field. We value a commitment to making a significant impact on clinical care, meticulous nursing practice with outstanding attention to detail, and proficient IT skills.

Main duties of the job

  • Assess trial protocols and advise on safety, regulatory and logistical issues in the running of the trial
  • Engage in consent conversations with patients and families, offering them opportunities to take part in research. 
  • With the PI actively assess the feasibility of studies to be undertaken
  • Performs all visits, observations, and interventions with the participants in accordance with the procedures and schedule of the study protocol.
  • Maintain Investigator Site File(s) and complete Case Report File / eCRF with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ensure appropriate trial information and data is contained in patient’s hospital notes.
  • Communicates to the senior research nurse / research nurse team / R&I / NIHR Clinical Research Network lead regarding research subjects, trial progress, workload issues and personal development.  
  • Ensure all data clarification issues are resolved quickly
  • May be expected to supervise junior members of the team, under overall supervision and guidance of senior research staff.
  • Competent in and uses on a daily basis word, spreadsheet and database programs, patient administration systems and the departmental software planning system “wall chart.”
  • Regularly uses software to develop documents or reports, including spreadsheets for external agencies where manipulation of the formulae is required (e.g. electronic data capture).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking for:

  • A qualified nurse with current UK NMC registration
  • Experience of clinical research is desirable
  • Any Surgery/theatres experience would be advantageous 
  • Current Good Clinical Practice certificate is desirable
  • A desire to make a real difference to clinical care
  • Meticulous practice with outstanding attention to detail
  • Good IT skills
  • Team player who can be flexible and adaptable according to the needs of the service

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RN with current live UK Registration
  • Significant post registration experience
Desirable criteria
  • Current Good Clinical Practice Certification
  • Degree level education in nursing or health related subject

Work Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of extended roles e.g. venepuncture, ECG's, link-roles (this list is not exhaustive)
  • Ability to manage the logistics to support workload
  • Able to work independently and manage day to day work activities
  • Effective personal time and case load management
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in working in Surgery, Vascular or Theatres.
  • Recent Clinical Research Experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, to include report writing and record keeping
  • Facilitation of development of other staff
  • Able to lead projects and work with the wider MDT and external sponsors to coordinate the delivery of this
  • Proficient in the use IT systems with previous experience of using databases and have meticulous data entry skills
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Understanding of the application of research within the clinical environment
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of the Trust’s Organisational Objectives
