Job overview
To effectively deliver fundamental dental care to the patients, ensuring it is evidence based and maintained
to a high standard, working in partnership with the patient and family. The senior dental nurse will provide
clinical support to dental practitioners during procedures in orthodontics.
The post will also cover Paediatric Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery in their role of delivering high quality
clinical services.
Main duties of the job
This post primarily involves working with patients across sites, providing specialised orthodontic nursing
support at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Solihull Hospital. The post holder
will be working as part of the dental team including consultants, dental nurses and administrators. The post
may have a requirement to work within other Outpatient services if required.
The post holder will also provide day to day clinical supervision of the dental nursing team in their professional
development. The post will supervise work of unqualified dental nurses, dental nurse students and support
with undergraduate teaching, and trainee dental hygiene students.
The post holder will provide pre- and post-operative dental hygiene advice to patients in specialised dental
area. In addition, the post holder may be required to carry out dental radiography and/or sedation.

Qualifications and experience
Essential criteria
- GDC registered
- Hold one of the following certificates: NEBDN National Certificate in Dental Nursing, NEBDN national certificate of orthodontic nursing S/NVQ Level 3 in Oral Healthcare: Dental Nursing or Dental Hospital Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Nursing • Or have equivalent experience and eligible for registration with Dental Care Professionals Register • Evidence of continuing professional development and its application
- Proven clinical practice in dental nursing skills and infection control practices within an NHS hospital environment or a dental practice
- Experience of teaching junior staff
- Experience of coordinating a clinic in absence of senior colleagues
- Two years post qualification
- Proven Good theoretical and practical knowledge of Dental nursing Health and Safety awarenessinical practice in Orthodontics
- Proven verbal and written communication
- Ability to plan, organise and prioritise workload
- Ability to take initiative when required and liaise with the appropriate manager
