An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic band 5 nurse to join the Metabolic Bone Disease Team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop specialist skills and knowledge in the care of children and young people with metabolic bone conditions, working within a supportive multidisciplinary team.
The successful candidate will work under the guidance of senior nursing staff, gaining experience in delivering high-quality care through nurse-led admissions and multidisciplinary clinics. This post is ideal for a nurse looking to build expertise in a specialist area while being supported to develop professionally and clinically.
You will have the chance to work across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings, assisting in patient education, care planning, and the coordination of services to ensure the best outcomes for children and their families.
Main duties of the job
- Provide specialist nursing care to children and young people with metabolic bone diseases, including planning, implementing, and evaluating care in partnership with families and the wider team.
- Participate in nurse led admissions and multidisciplinary clinics across a range of settings, ensuring patients receive evidence-based interventions and support.
- Act as a key point of contact for patients, families, and external agencies, offering advice, education, and resources to facilitate informed decision-making and care planning.
- Participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and school visits to ensure continuity of care and safe integration into education and social environments.
- Assist in transitional care planning for adolescents moving to adult services.
- Collaborate with shared-care centres, primary care teams, and schools, providing training and resources to enhance local care delivery.
- Support audits, protocol reviews, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance service standards and clinical outcomes.
- Contribute to the development of new treatments and protocols, maintaining up to date clinical knowledge through continuous professional development.
- Work alongside the senior nursing staff to develop the service and act as a resource for patients and healthcare providers.

- Demonstrate an interest in the role of the nurse specialist caring for children and young people with metabolic bone disease

Desirable criteria
- Demonstration of current clinical skills in caring for children and young people with metabolic bone disease
- Clinical skills such as venipuncture and cannulation
- Participating in regional and national group forums

- Evidence of band 5 management experience
- Recent experience of mentoring junior staff/students
- Ability to access, use and interpret Word, Excel, Powerpoint and EPR/Lorenzo, or willing to master

- An understanding of local and national service delivery for children and young people with metabolic bone disease
