An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, self –motivated, flexible individual to join our infection prevention and control team.

The post holder will support the lead infection control nurse in the delivery of the Trust infection control agenda. You will provide clinical expertise which inspires and motivates others to ensure the highest standards of infection prevention and control practice are delivered in accordance with Trust infection prevention and control policy.

The successful applicant will be required to work autonomously and as part of the team across all Trust sites.  You will require the ability to work in a dynamic, flexible and organised manner, delivering a highly visible and responsive service across the trust. You will develop working relationships with other corporate functions and external services such as UK Health Security Agency, NHSE and infection prevention networks.   

Applicants need to have substantial experience working within infection control in a healthcare setting. All applicants will hold a first level degree or diploma and evidence post registration education/development in healthcare.  It is important that applicants demonstrate a sound knowledge of infection control and experience of implementing infection control in clinical practice. The post holder will be expected to line manage junior members of the team.

To provide expert advice to support ward and departmental staff when patients have an infection ensuring all medical and nursing needs are understood and carried out in accordance with BSMHFT guidelines.

Deputise for the Nurse Consultant for IPC

To act as an expert resource advising on national, local & Trust policy and guidelines. Advise and, where appropriate, lead on implementation, promoting best practice and ensuring a review process that looks at quality and efficiency, which meet the needs of patients and service.

Exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, acting as an expert practitioner demonstrating advanced clinical competence, decision making and a knowledge base beyond those associated with conventional nursing roles.

Advise Senior Managers and Matrons on service developments that will be of benefit to patients, whilst assisting with meeting trust objectives.

Work in collaboration with the BSMHT staff and actively involve users of the service to gain their input to service development to ensure continuous improvement in practice.

Assess monitor and report clinical risks associated with Infection Control.  Support the development and delivery of action plans to eliminate associated risks, evaluate outcomes of same.

Play a prominent role in the Infection Control Committee & Operational Group.

Ensure that appropriate, consistent, and realistic information is provided to patients and relatives.

Be involved in the BSMHT Incident Review Process.

Contribute to emergency planning and pandemic flu planning.

Support Directorates in the role of performance managing infection and outbreaks if they arise.

Actively contribute to and support the development of root cause analysis of infections in directorates and ensure wider learning across the organisation.
