Are you an experienced Mental Health Practitioner, looking for your next role? Why not join Psychological Medicine Service based at Royal Berkshire Hospital, a 24 hour service shift work? Royal Berkshire Hospital Psychological Medicine Service (PMS) is an established CORE 24 service as outlined by NHS England. The team is also accredited with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. The role of the Senior Mental Health Practitioner within this service is to provide an assessment service to people who are referred to PMS from the Emergency Department and from the acute admission wards at Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The post holder will be responsible for the formulation, execution and evaluation of a care plan, including signposting to other services. The post holder will ensure that each individual plan is developed in consultation/agreement with the service user and informed by the wider multidisciplinary team.

The post holder will be confident in taking positive risk in accordance with the Trust Policy around Risk Assessment and management.

As an experienced mental health practitioner the post holder will direct and students and resources within their area of responsibility.

The post holder will be a member of the Psychological Medicine Service and as such will be working across the hospital, covering shifts over a 24 hour, 7 day a week operation as set out in its operational policy. 

  • The post holder will provide assessments to patients, following appropriate induction and training. 

  • To maintain and develop relationships with professionals external to the area of service, service users and their significant others (where appropriate) within area of service/specialism. 

  • To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of specialist care. And to be responsible for development and delivery of intensive crisis care plan, working collaboratively with multi-agencies to ensure service users’ needs are met.

The “must haves” for you to be considered for this role: 

1. RMN or equivalent Professional Qualification. 

2. Minimum 1 year post registration experience in working with people with mental health needs. 

3. Able to evidence good communications and prioritisation skills. 

4. Evidence of ability to undertake good assessment, risk assessment and management.

Previous Experience

  • Minimum 1 year post registration experience in working with people with mental health needs.
  • Community and in-patient experience in mental health services.
  • Considerable experience in the assessment and management of clinical risk.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Very good understanding of the mental health needs of adults
  • Specialist knowledge of person centred care and its application.
  • Working knowledge of the policies and guidelines pertinent to the planning and delivery of care to adults with mental health needs.
  • Recovery focused practitioner able to apply recovery principles to adults and older people
  • Clear understanding of psychotropic medication and the monitoring of effects and side effects.
