Job overview

As a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse – Health Visitor, you will provide expert advice, support, and interventions to families with children in the first years of life and help to empower parents to make decisions that positively affect their family’s future health and wellbeing.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role include:

  • The delivery of the full-service offer of mandated contacts underpinned by the Healthy Child Programme.
  • To work collaboratively with other agencies to promote health and well-being and improve early identification of need and risks to improve child outcomes.
  • To empower individuals, families, and communities to influence and access services and information and act as an advocate particularly for those families who find services difficult to access.
  • Contribute to safeguarding of children in collaboration with partners using national and local policies to guide professional decision making and action.

The service in Bristol is led by Health Visitors and supported by a skill mix team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Professional Practice and Leadership

•    Deliver the full-service offer outlined in the current Health Visiting Service specification.
•    Utilise a range of skills including advanced communication skills and analytical skills to complete a Holistic Needs Assessment with families to ascertain the level of support required. 
•    Confidently articulate the service vision (Healthy Child Programme within an iTHRIVE framework) and underpinning evidence, particularly with families, stakeholders and partners.
•    Ensure practice is up to date and underpinned by the latest evidence base.
•    Work collaboratively with other agencies to promote health and well-being and improve early identification of need and risks to child outcomes.  Facilitating access to additional support and information as required. 
•    Empower individuals, families and communities to influence and access services, information and skills and act as an advocate particularly for those families who find services difficult to access
•    Understand the importance of trauma informed practice in creating accessible services that are culturally sensitive and safe that children, young people, and families trust and want to use
•    Work in partnership with local communities, services, and partners to ensure place-based service delivery is responsive to need and local priorities.
•    Actively participate in supporting students of all levels through the provision of placement support, supervision, assessment and development opportunities. 
•    Actively participate in supporting the preceptorship of newly qualified staff. 
•    Positively engage in UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative to support all families in their Infant Feeding choices whilst supporting the organisation to attain and maintain the UNICEF BFI accreditation standards.
•    Utilise group facilitation skills at the drop-in baby hubs and cultivate an environment which supports parental self-efficacy and self-compassion.
•    Deliver the Maternal Early Childhood Sustained Home-visiting (MECSH) programme to families including the recruitment of families into the programme.
•    Complete all routine data collection that is required as part of the Health Visitor role.
•    Contribute to safeguarding of children in collaboration with partners using national and local policies to guide professional decision making and action.
•    Health Visitors will actively engage in Safeguarding Supervision and training. Acting within local and National policies and guidelines. 

Quality Assurance

•    Actively participate in audit and performance reporting including supervision, reflections on practice, case studies and reports.
•    Actively participate in service development linking the current evidence using an innovative and solution focussed approach.
•    Maintain an awareness of CQC requirements and contribute to improvements required in CQC standards including participation in inspections and assessments.
•    An awareness of raising risks that have been identified. Working with Line Manager and other Sirona processes to manage and mitigate where necessary. 
•    Use complaints and significant events to reflect on practice and to improve the service for families in partnership with others within a no blame culture of learning.
•    Engage in the use of information technology, including the organisation’s social media pages, electronic patient records and systems management to enhance both the effectiveness and accessibility of the health visiting service.

Communication and Relationships

•    Demonstrate Taking It Personally in all interactions with colleagues, children, young people, families, communities and wider system partners.
•    Advocate for the needs of the child/carer/family or the team/service when required.
•    Demonstrate an ability to respond sensitively to the diverse communication requirements of children, young people, parents, communities and system partners.    
•    Recognise that conversations with all colleagues/children/families/system partners can occasionally be challenging and demonstrate the skills to manage this while ensuring all those involved feel valued and heard. 
•    Acknowledge and access support for own emotional and wellbeing needs when they may have been impacted by sensitive or complex situations or scenarios.  

Research and Development

•    Maintain CPD requirements in line with Sirona mandatory training and NMC expectations.
•    Participate in Annual Professional Development Review (PDR). Highlighting opportunities for learning and development. 
•    Engage in the development of quality standards including service transformation and the implementation of new processes to improve services for children, young people, communities and families. 
•    Contribute to research and development including activities that embrace a co-productive approach.
•    Participate in collaborative working for example with local universities in research projects and student learning.

Finances and Physical Resources

•    Ensure resources are used effectively and maintained as required by organizational policies.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • A Degree or Post Graduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN).
  • Must have a current NMC Registration Registered Nurse (Adult, Children’s, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health) and or Registered Midwife
Desirable criteria
  • • Evidence of successful study at post graduate level
  • • Evidence of supporting students in Practice

Skills, Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Must be able to work in partnership with parents using a solution focussed approach and appropriate assessment skills and tools. This should clearly demonstrate child and family strengths and/or needs focused on the 6 High Impact Areas
  • • Evidence of a clear knowledge and understanding of the Health Visiting contribution to public health outcomes.
  • • Demonstrate a proactive approach to sharing and distributing new evidence and research within the sphere of Public Health Nursing. Demonstrating a proactive and questioning approach to new evidence and research.
  • • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the theory underpinning public health nursing including the impact of wider determinants of health and parenting capacity on child outcomes both in the short term and long term.
  • • Evidence of working in collaboration with other healthcare professionals and service providers to facilitate seamless delivery of services for local families and communities.
  • • Demonstrate ability to remain focussed on the child and child outcomes when working with complexity, risk and uncertainty.
  • • Evidence of a clear understanding of the safeguarding role of health visitors within a universal service and multi-agency context.
  • • Demonstrate an ability to understand the need for change following service transformation and improvement, embracing new ways of thinking and working to embed updates in evidence, policies and guidance.
  • • Demonstrate a reflective approach to practice improvement and personal development.
Desirable criteria
  • • Familiar with MECSH, ASQ, ELIM
  • • Group facilitation skills – either with parents, students or colleagues

  • • This role requires the successful applicant to be mobile, visiting several locations across a wide geographical area so the post holder must hold a valid UK driving licence and have access to an appropriate means of transport to undertake the job effectively.
