Job overview
By leading the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme, School Nurses in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire can ensure equitable access for children, young people and families to information and support in their own community that includes schools. By utilising their leadership skills School Nurses ensure that information and support is integrated and informed by the latest evidence and provided at the right time for children, young people, and families.
School Nurses are based in local communities across Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire. Working from schools, Hubs, and other Community venues.
Please note there are two positions available: permanent up to full time hours and a fixed term opportunity for 26.25 hours per week until March 2026.
Main duties of the job
The School Nurse will use advanced assessment skills to work in partnership with children, young people, and families to understand their needs and agree any appropriate support required to contribute to improving their long-term outcomes.
You will;
- Lead on the triaging of referrals and carrying out holistic
needs assessment through utilising advanced communication skills and expert assessment skills to determine the level of support required. - Work collaboratively with other agencies to promote health and well-being and improve early identification of strengths, needs and risks to child outcomes. This includes contributing to child protection procedures, early help support and looked after children plans.
- Actively participate in supporting students of all levels and disciplines by involvement in supervision and assessment and development opportunities.
- Be a motivated team member working innovatively and with a high standard of practice that is research based.
- Lead, develop, implement, and evaluate health promotion activities for children, young people and families that may include webinars and roadshows.
- Lead the provision of school drop-in clinics in secondary schools working in partnership with schools.

Experience and Skills
Essential criteria
- Experience working in partnership with children, young people and families using a solution focussed approach and appropriate assessment skills and tools. This should clearly demonstrate child and family strengths and/or needs focussed on the 6 High Impact Areas.
- Clear knowledge and understanding of the School Nursing contribution to public health outcomes.
- Demonstrate a proactive approach to sharing and distributing new evidence and research within the sphere of Public Health Nursing. Demonstrating a proactive and questioning approach to new evidence and research.
- Experience working in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, education colleagues and service providers to facilitate seamless delivery of services for local families and communities.
- Evidence of a clear understanding of the safeguarding role of School Nursing within a universal service and multi-agency context.
- Engage in the use of information technology, including the organisation’s social media pages, electronic patient records and systems management to enhance both the effectiveness and accessibility of the School Nursing service.
- Demonstrate an ability to understand the need for change following service transformation and improvement, embracing new ways of thinking and working to embed updates in evidence, policies, and guidance.
Desirable criteria
- Familiar with trauma informed and solution focused brief intervention approaches.
- Group facilitation skills – either with parents, children, young people, students or colleagues.
- Evidence of successful study at post graduate level
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NMC Registration
- Registered School Nurse - SCPHN
- Registered Nurse (Adult, Children’s, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health) and or Registered Midwife
- A Degree or Post Graduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN)
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of supporting students in practice
