Job overview

Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is the lead provider for perinatal services for the Yorkshire and Humber provider collaborative which went live in April 2025. In autumn 2025 there will be a further bed expansion to the existing and only mother and baby unit in Yorkshire and Humber, which will allow for inpatient care to be provided for mothers and their infants closer to their home.

As part of this exciting expansion of our Mother and Baby Unit at The Mount in Leeds, we are looking for compassionate, dedicated, and skilled professionals to join our dynamic team. As we grow, we aim to continue providing the highest standard of care to mothers and their infants in a supportive and nurturing environment.

“Our goal is to work together to improve mental health care for new mums and their families. We want every woman to get the right care, at the right time, in the best place for both her and her baby. By partnering with families and other services, we’re committed to making sure everyone across Yorkshire and Humber has equal access to the support they need.”

Main duties of the job

The core purpose of the charge nurse role on the Mother and Baby Unit is to work as part of the leadership team providing and ensuring that quality assessment, care planning and care delivery is provided to all mothers and their families during their admission. This will include role modelling and the providing highly skilled nursing care, psychological interventions, clinical assessment, risk assessments / risk management, and promoting recovery and inclusion.

The charge nurse will provide leadership, management and supervision / appraisal for staff and often lead / coordinate / supervise teams of staff in the delivery and evaluation of care.

You will need to work flexibly and continuously network and engage with community clinical services and partner organisations; with the overall aim of improving service user experience and outcomes.

Applicants will need to demonstrate sound values, including compassion around meeting the needs of service-users and their carers, recognising the importance of co-production and choice in the planning and delivery of care. You will promote social inclusion, community access and participation through ensuring quality around care provision.

This is an essential requirement, and the Trust is unable to offer you a role if you do not meet Trust requirements for sponsorship and Home Office requirements for a visa.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a charge nurse on the mother and baby unit you would be working a combination of clinical day shifts and management days across the 7-day period. Your responsibilities would include day to day support of both mothers and infants, efficient coordination of shifts to optimise the resources and staffing available to best meet the needs of the mothers and their infants. Efficient leadership and organisation is essential to the charge nurse role on the mother and baby unit.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who would contribute to ongoing service development and improvement. You would be expected to be able to work well as part of a team, but also to be motivated and self-directed.

As a service we are committed to providing regular and good quality supervision to our staff. We offer a comprehensive induction package, and staff have the opportunity to undertake specialist perinatal mental health training both internally and externally.

An interest in women’s mental health and the particular needs of the infant where the primary care giver is suffering from a significant illness is essential.

We recruit people based on their values and qualifications (where required) and believe that their lived experience is an advantage, this means that together we are as diverse as the communities we care for. Simply put, when we employ caring people who act with integrity and have the right skills, we can give those with mental health challenges, learning disabilities and neurodiversity high-quality care and support to live fulfilling lives, and make our staff feel purposeful, happy and valued.
