Main duties of the job
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced band 5 Nurse to work in a friendly and supportive team within Cardiac High Dependency Unit (CHDU). Our 20 bedded CHDU caters for mixed specialty adult patients including cardiac surgery, congenital heart disease and cardiology patients requiring specialist care. You will join our friendly and dedicated CHDU team, within a care group which has a local, national and international reputation for delivering expert cardiothoracic care to our patients. Clinical expertise is at the forefront of making sure that patients have the best clinical outcome and receive care that is current and evidence based.
The CHDU at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust leads the way for adult cardiac patients in:
• Complex electrophysiological treatments
• Heart failure
• cardiac surgery
The cardiothoracic care group provides regional tertiary cardiothoracic services as well as meeting the local needs of people in the Southampton, Eastleigh, and New Forest areas; in total a population of approximately two million people. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As well as the relevant qualifications, we are looking for you to demonstrate:
• The skills to work in a challenging environment
• Enthusiastic approach to learning including self-directed learning
• The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
In this post, you will have the opportunity to gain skills and competence in:
• critical care therapies,
• short-term ventilation,
• non-invasive ventilation,
• inotropes, and
• intra-aortic balloon pump therapy.
You will be provided with a supernumerary period, high dependency unit (HDU) induction sessions, bedside coaching, and a competency-based programme to support you through your career progression. You will also benefit from the support of our dedicated and enthusiastic education and senior nursing team within the unit, who provide ongoing development and training.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
- Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
- Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
- Understanding of personal accountability
- Knowledge of own role within the team
- Provide evidence of teaching and supporting learners in practice in the role of practice supervisor
- Awareness of evidence-based practice
- Awareness of responsibilities for management of infection control
- Evidence of on-going personal development
- Able to use initiative
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of recent study
- Previous experience/qualification in relevant specialty
- Teaching experience
