Main duties of the job

The Cardio Thoracic Nurse Case manager team is looking for a Pre-Assessment Nurse to join their friendly team of Nurse Practitioners. This is an ideal opportunity for those who want to further enhance their specialist nursing knowledge and skills within a supportive environment.

About the team. 
The nurse practitioners provide a pre-operative assessment service for patients undergoing Cardio Thoracic surgery and Cardiology interventions. The nurse practitioners liaise closely with  Consultant surgeons, Anaesthetist and MDT teams across the regions to ensure quality care throughout the whole of the patients’ journey.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What you’ll do.

•    To work as an independent Practitioner under the supervision of the Senior Nurse Practitioner / Nurse Case Manager or Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP)
•    This role involves undertaking competency-based patient assessment and examination in order to formulate a management plan for specific groups of patients admitted to UHS for surgical pre-operative assessment.
•    The Surgery pre-assessment nurse is expected to undertake all preparatory work prior to the patient undergoing surgical intervention which may include consent, request of any further investigations and to highlight any potential complications to the Senior Nurse Practitioner / Nurse case manager or relevant medical colleague.

What we’re looking for
 
The post holder will ideally have experience of supporting patients with Cardiovascular & Thoracic disease within primary or secondary care. They will need to be adaptable and flexible and work in varied environments across organisational boundaries. You will require a flexible approach to working patterns and will be required to work to a rota.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse on relevant part of the NMC register
  • Evidence of on-going personal development.
  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • Evidence of supporting learners in practice
  • Basic keyboard skills with knowledge of Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • History taking and Physical Assessment experience / course and competencies
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis course
  • Independent Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification
  • Advanced Communication course
  • Management Experience / Course

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience within a surgical setting.
  • Broad awareness of wider Trust initiatives/pressures
  • Logical and consistent work and career pattern.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of clinical leadership and managerial ability
  • Evidence of ability to change or initiate practice
  • Broad range of post registration experience including within a preoperative assessment setting.
  • Worked autonomously in previous clinical roles
