Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a temporary Matron post within Surgical and Associated Specialties Clinical Board, working predominantly within ENT and the Institute of Transplantation. This is a diverse clinical area and the post holder will have the opportunity to directly influence and improve the care of patients in both in patient and busy specialist outpatient settings. In addition you will mange and lead a number of Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Practitioners , supporting them to develop the services they provide. 

We are looking for an innovative and enthusiastic, highly visible nursing leader who is passionate about providing professional and clinical leadership for all the clinical teams, ensuring the delivery of patient focused high quality standards of care. 

To undertake this challenging but exciting role you will need to have extensive experience in leading and managing nursing teams and have the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams The successful candidate will be proactive and ensure that service needs and patient experience are met to the high standards we aspire to 

You will work with a supportive leadership team who will encourage your professional development and provide the opportunities for you to thrive in this role. 

Main duties of the job

Demonstrate effective highly visible leadership, setting, monitoring and maintaining professional standards. 

Working collaboratively with a range of professionals and lead the nursing contribution for clinical governance at specialty/department level. Ensuring robust processes are in place to share learning from complaints and clinical incidents and to use this knowledge to influence and improve practice. 

Be an integral member of the leadership/management team providing nursing advice, manage specialty nursing teams and contribute innovative solutions to the development of clinical pathways. 

Monitor clinical standards are practice. 

To provide a visible, accessible clinical presence to enable staff, patients and their families to access appropriate advice and support.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The Matron has 24 hour accountability for the wards and departments in their Directorate. 

  • They must ensure appropriate systems and processes are in place to ensure the continuity of safe and effective care at all times.

  • Deputies for Directorate Manager as required / appropriate and is part of Directorate Management Team. 

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.

SKILLS

  • Appropriate clinical skills
  • Move and handle objects in line with Trust guidelines using appropriate aids

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience, some of which must be at Band 7
  • Significant experience at a senior level of managing nursing / clinical teams
  • Audit / research experience
  • Evidence of achievements in current post
  • Evidence of proven leadership skills in relation to professional accountability
  • Evidence of significant experience of safeguarding adults / children

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
  • Current NMC registration
  • Able to demonstrate academic achievement at post-graduate/masters level or significant demonstrable experience in speciality at Matron level
  • Willing to undertake full Master’s Degree within an agreed timescale
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship relevant to role
