Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will have a strong patient focus and be able to lead a service. 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a nurse with a good knowledge of epilepsy to join the Wessex Neurological Centre as an Epilepsy Nurse Specialist for Adults.  Based at Portsmouth University Hospital (Queen Alexandra)  the post holder will work closely with the teams both at PHU and University Hospital Southampton. 

The post holder will lead the service on the PHU site.  They will be a key point of contact for patients living with epilepsy,  offering information, advice and support.  They will support patients with their medical management and also those undergoing surgical treatments.  They will act as an expert resource for other healthcare professionals and community services.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC register
  • Level 7 Post Grad Cert (Min 60 Credits), Master’s Degree within relevant speciality or equivalent knowledge to be assessed through evidence of relevant speciality training, experience or portfolio
  • Specialist training / Qualification in area of practice
  • Provide evidence of leading learning in practice
  • Evidence of experience and completion of all band 6 competencies within relevant speciality
  • Evidence of change Management, leadership and innovation
  • Specialist clinical skills and experience within specialist area
  • Clinical experience at Band 6 or equivalent within relevant speciality
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote learning in practice providing an excellent learning environment for all
  • Provide evidence of supporting / managing and supervision of a range of learnings in practice
Desirable criteria
  • Counselling / advanced communication skills qualification / training
  • Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed
