Main duties of the job
University Hospital Southampton are delighted to be able to offer a unique and exciting fixed term opportunity for a Senior Matron within the Neonatal Department who will lead this large and dynamic, award-winning department within our Women and Newborn Care Group.
The successful candidate will have existing experience of leading teams in providing acute clinical care, be a RN/RSCN/RM and have evidence of ongoing professional development, whilst aspiring to be a leader of the future.
Southampton is home to a large, regional intensive care neonatal unit with 37 beds, including surgical and cardiac specialities and a retrieval and transfer service. We also provide care in the community from a dedicated home team.
Princess Anne Hospital (PAH), where the Neonatal Unit is situated, is a centre of excellence for maternity care and a regional centre for fetal, maternal and neonatal medicine. UHS also has paediatric intensive care provision, and we work in close partnership with them in managing workflow. The unit planned expansion has recently completed which includes a separate nurse-led special care ward as part of services.
There is a focus on neonatal research in the department and we are currently involved with several national and international trials. We employ separate research nurses for recruitment and running of the research projects. We have an established quality improvement agenda and are always looking for ways to improve how we work and deliver our care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role is key to the provision of safe and effective services and the leadership of our clinical teams to provide care with our babies and families at the centre. We expect that all UHS employees demonstrate our values of patient’s first, working together and always improving and the Lead Matron needs to exhibit these in all their actions and decision making. As Neonatal Matron, you will be working closely with our Network partners, Children’s Hospital and Maternity Matrons to ensure babies are cared for in the right place in partnership with their families.
As an operational leader, you will have critical care / operational / specialist experience and be able to demonstrate a desire for high standards of practice. You will be able to provide effective and visible leadership to nursing staff and the whole team required to deliver our services. This will be through managerial and professional support on a day-to-day basis within the department. You will be line manager to a team of senior nurses and inspire them to manage and develop their teams. Most importantly, support for staff health and wellbeing will remain at the core of your decision making.
As a member of the senior leadership team, you will have oversight of resource management and budget responsibility. You will use your ability to understand data collected on the unit to monitor and maintain professional standards, to ensure robust governance and effective risk management.
We are looking for a confident, well organised leader of a large team who thrives in a dynamic clinical setting with varied priorities. You will have experience at Band 8A or above, appropriate for this specialist setting. Communication skills, both written and verbal, are vital in demonstrating sound leadership and management abilities necessary for this role.
