Job overview

This post will work alongside the Midwifery, Obstetric and Endocrine teams providing clinical advice, specialist skill, knowledge and expertise in the care and management of women with diabetes in pregnancy.  The post holder will initiate, develop, and maintain services in the assessment and management of women with pre-existing and gestational diabetes in pregnancy. The post holder will provide a specialist role within the maternity team as a practitioner developing advanced midwifery practice within the diabetic service, working as part of the MDT to develop and support the ongoing management of diabetes care provision within the maternity service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the senior midwifery leadership team within the maternity department. They will work as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team to coordinate care within the outpatients setting and ensure effective day to day management, care planning and treatment for women within the service.

The individual will ensure the highest standards of midwifery care and have an ability to lead and implement practice changes within the department. They will support the continuing professional development of the midwifery team sharing expert knowledge and participating in research opportunities as they arise. They will be an innovator with specialist midwifery skills that will support the growth of care provision for women with diabetes in pregnancy within the maternity unit.

Mon to Friday, 5 days a week cover with job share

The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic midwife to join our innovative and award winning maternity service.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 7 specialist midwife to provide leadership and clinical expertise within our expanding maternal diabetes service.

This post holder will need to be highly organised with an ability to make complex decisions and manage constantly shifting demands typical of a busy maternity service. You will have responsibility for maintaining the safety of pregnant women with pre-existing diabetes and gestational diabetes, supporting their journey from diagnosis to birth.

The maternity department at the Royal Surrey is highly successful; it is rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, has achieved Gold Accreditation under the Unicef Baby Friendly Initiative and has achieved all 10 safety actions as a part of NHS Resolution’s CNST scheme. Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Demonstrates evidence of maintaining professional knowledge and study at a graduate level
  • Ability to maintain own knowledge and competence with regards to revalidation requirements
  • Mentorship qualification or equivalent teaching qualification
  • Additional post registration experience in care of women with diabetes and ongoing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Non-medical prescribing (or willing to undertake)

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience in midwifery setting at senior level
  • Evidence of advanced clinical skills; IV competent
  • Demonstrates experience of managing staff and resources effectively and efficiently
  • Evidence of experience in change management and leading projects
  • Evidence of achievement in practice development and quality improvement
  • Awareness of current NHS issues surrounding governance and quality
