Job overview

Daisy ward is an Acute admissions Ward providing care to adults with mental health conditions such as Bipolar affective disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. The Ward can support the needs of up to 20 patients in a caring and compassionate environmentBased in Reading, located close to the amenities of the town centre and a leafy park, the wards work closely with patients and families to help them to identify their needs and participate actively in their care, providing a place of empathy, kindness, and compassion. 

Main duties of the job

  • To contribute to the clinical management of designated service users, in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care. Participate in undertaking joint risk assessments and support the development and review of risk management and care-plans with patients and their carers to an identified group within their level of competency under the supervision of a registered professional. 

  • Support the admission and discharge process of patients by completing aspects of the process which they have been assessed as competent to undertake. This may include aspects of core assessment and supporting the team in MDT reviews.  

  • To identify opportunities for therapeutic activities and provide and supervise these as appropriate, providing emotional support and stability to patients through 1:1 and group work and ensuring effective engagement whilst maintaining professional boundaries.  

  • Delegate work where appropriate and support junior staff and students in actively engaging in a range of therapeutic patient activity.  

  • To ensure effective communication with patients, relatives and carers, visitors, staff, and others acknowledging and addressing barriers to understanding

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The “must haves” for this role:   

  1. A Degree BSC in a health-related subject or significant equivalent experience of working in an inpatient mental health setting together with relevant short courses. English and Maths GCSE or equivalent and IT literate

  1. Ability to work in a stressful environment. 

  1. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree: for example, BSc in a health related subject or
  • Health related qualification e.g. NVQ /QCF Level 5 in Health and Social Care or higher; or
  • Foundation Degree Health and Social Science; or
  • significant equivalent relevant experience in inpatient mental health setting together with relevant short courses and willingness to undertake required level 5 health care qualification
  • Good general educational qualifications including English
  • IT literate

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to undertake further required training, professional development and self-improvement to support patient care and experience (Level of training required will be dependent on existing level of qualifications and competency)

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • Robust and relevant experience within healthcare settings
  • Experience working within inpatient mental health settings
  • Previous experience in supporting others in developing skills

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing at all levels including with patients, carers and MDT members/Trust employees
  • Ability to take on and complete delegated tasks in accordance with the competency framework
  • To be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
Desirable criteria
  • To be able to demonstrate understanding and knowledge of recovery focused interventions
