An exciting opportunity has become available to join Hamwic House the oncology day unit as a sister/charge nurse at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will join a wonderful team of nurses and HCAs providing outpatient care for oncology patients requiring IV SACT, blood products, supportive infusions, and blood tests. Responsibilities of this role include the operational running of the unit as nurse in charge, coordinating good patient flow, communicating with the MDT, supporting junior colleagues, and managing acutely unwell patients. 

Hamwic House treatment area consists of 18 treatment chairs with an additional side room and private patient suite which are available Monday-Friday 8am-8pm. We also provide phlebotomy and CVAD care services on Sundays 8am- 4pm. As well as treating patients at UHS we send a team of nurses to Lymington hospital on Thursdays and Fridays as an outreach service to offer treatment closer to home.

Main duties of the job additional:

As a Hamwic House Band 6 you will be expected to undertake audits to ensure patient safety and clinical quality and be proactive in initiating changes to improve the service. You will be the team leader of a small team of nurses, HCAS, and housekeepers by completing annual appraisals, supporting training needs, and being involved in management processes. As well a managerial responsibility as a cancer care band 6 you will be expected to carry the cancer care staffing bleep. As the bleep holder you need to ensure safe staffing levels across the inpatient wards and outpatient units and problem-solving issues as they arise.

In this role you will be supported to continue your professional development through courses both in-house at UHS and outside the organisation, and offers the opportunity to prepare for future career prospects in management, CNS or ACP roles. 


•    Applicant must have completed their systemic anti cancer treatment qualification and be confident in delivering SACT.
•    Enthusiasm and motivation for working in cancer care and interest in developing in this speciality.  
•    IV skills including cannulation and phlebotomy.
•    Excellent communication and time management skills. 
•    Able to recognise deterioration in patients’ condition and escalate successfully and initiate further interventions. 
•    Able to work flexibly to meet shift pattern requirements including long days and weekends

  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
  • Ward management experience
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical decision making and judgement
