Job overview

Our Neonatal service is getting bigger and better and an exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled nurse to work as part of the Imperial College Healthcare Neonatal team. This is a really exciting time to join our team.

Our Neonatal service is the largest neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) service within North West London.  We care for babies receiving cooling therapy, complex respiratory support, and treatment for ROP. Our skilled and experienced nursing team are fundamental in providing the incredibly high level care our babies deserve. We put our patients and their families at the centre of every decision we make and you can join us in giving our patients the Best Start in Life.

As a Band 7 nurse you will act as a team leader to your own team of nurses acting as their mentor/ supervisor and Performance Development Review (PDR) lead. We will enable you to develop confidence and skills as a leader with support and coaching from a team made up of educators and Matrons and Senior Nurses. We can support you with advanced leadership training to guide you through your own leadership development.

Main duties of the job

  • As a key member of a multi professional team, ensure appropriate referral and discussion with other members of the team to optimise patient care.
  • Ensure patients are assessed, have care plans that are implemented and evaluated in accordance with Trust’s evidence based procedural documents.
  • To have local open and transparent communication channels that support the ward team to do the right thing for people we care for, to be bold when they have good ideas and to speak up when things go wrong.
  • Act as a clinical expert within sphere of work.
  • Have continuous responsibility for the ward area, providing visible professional leadership and line management for a team of nursing and support staff.
  •  Ensure staffing is in line with Trust policy.
  • Manage budgets and resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Be responsible for the safety and cleanliness of the clinical environment.

Education/ qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife
  • Post registration Qualification
  • Safeguarding Children training (Level 1-3)
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree/level 7 study

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-registration experience at Band 6, or relevant area with transferable skills
  • Experience in clinical Neonatology
  • Decision making ability
  • Knowledge of quality, standard setting, benchmarking and audit.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience at Band 7 as a team leader

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills, empathy, kindness
  • Practical knowledge of CQC standards and requirements
