Trosolwg o'r swydd

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Stroke Specialist Nurses Team for a fixed term 9 month secondment on Ward 42 at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The Stroke Nurse Practitioners and Stroke Specialist Nurses work 24/7 and triage and admit all suspected acute stroke patients via paramedic ambulance directly to the assessment bay on ward 42. Patients are examined and assessed, given timely hyper acute treatment where appropriate – thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy, randomised into clinical trials and a management plan is devised before admitting onto the Acute stroke unit.

Patients are also seen in the Emergency department, referred by inpatient teams, Eye casualty by their GP and seen in TIA clinic.

We work very closely with the ward medical team, therapists, stroke research and various departments throughout the hospital.

The successful candidate will be expected to work alongside the existing specialist nursing team, learning from them in relation to stroke triage, performing a neurological assessment, cannulation and venepuncture and following the stroke pathway before being able to work independently.

We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in Acute Stroke Care and has had experience of looking after stroke patients. The candidate must be enthusiastic, dynamic and be able to work under pressure.

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group.

To work towards the role of an independent nurse practitioner, contributing towards the delivery of a quality service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice:

  • To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care.
  • Will provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need.
  • Supports the clinical team to manage a defined caseload, activity to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined protocols and training.
  • Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others.
  • Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g. AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team.
  • Liaises with Patient Services Coordinator.
  • Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward/departmental staff and/or out of hour’s team.
  • Contributes to specialist education and training to ward departmental staff, nursing and medical students.

  • • Diploma plus specialist qualifications / experience within specialist area; prepared to take degree level study
  • • Working towards / prepared to work towards: Working towards Nurse Practitioner Qualification or equivalent
  • • Working towards / prepared to work towards: Working towards Clinical Skills Course
  • • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formally Mentorship) if relevant to role

  • • Degree in health related subject
  • • Has undertaken and completed Non-medical independent nurse prescribing course

Knowledge & Experience
