The maternity services at the Royal Surrey has recently been rated Outstanding by the CQC.
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced pharmacist to join our pharmacy team as Lead Pharmacist for Women and Children’s Division.
Successful applicants will have significant hospital experience and be able to demonstrate consistent achievement in the areas outlined in the General Level Competency Framework. The role requires a breadth of clinical expertise, and experience of working closely with clinicians and driving change in practice.
Candidates should hold a Diploma in Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent) and enthusiasm to pursue further postgraduate education will be supported. You should be a team player with the ability to introduce change and have a keen interest to actively participate in the training and development of others.

The post holder will work as part of an established team and work closely with the Principal Pharmacist for Access and Medicine Division, to lead the delivery of pharmaceutical care to the Women’s and Children directorate. The post holder will also support medicines governance agenda for the Trust and wider healthcare systems.
Training and experience in line management and supervision of trainee pharmacists and diploma students will be provided. The successful applicant will be required to participate in late night, weekend working and public holiday work.
This is a full time post of 37.5 hours per week.

• To work in partnership with the Chief Pharmacist and all other pharmacists to ensure safe, effective, economical and timely pharmaceutical care for all patients receiving a pharmaceutical service from the department.
• To lead, provide, develop and evaluate clinical pharmacy services to meet the needs of the Women and Children (W&C) Specialty Business Unit (SBU) in accordance with objectives set by the Deputy Chief Pharmacist – Clinical Operations in order to meet Trust objectives and the Clinical Governance Agenda.
• To lead by example in the specialty of W&C to ensure a consistently high quality clinical pharmacy service is delivered to all clinical areas of the relevant SBU in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
• To plan and implement under the direction of the Deputy Chief Pharmacist-Clinical Services the strategic direction of the clinical pharmacy service provided to the Trust and lead on delivery within the W&C SBU.
• To be a resource for the whole department and the Trust in the specialist area.
• Provide relevant teaching/training/educational sessions under the direction (not supervision) of the Deputy Chief Pharmacist – Clinical Operations.
• Deputise for the Deputy Chief Pharmacist – Clinical Operations where the service requires.
• Provide a cover for the clinical pharmacy provision to other wards when the service requires.
• Responsible for leading, developing and evaluating the delivery of clinical pharmacy services to W&C SBU. The post holder has responsibility for the following main areas and specialities: Paediatric Medicine and Surgery, Neonatal services, Paediatric A&E, Maternity, Obstetric theatres and Non-Surgical Gynaecology.
• Manage the clinical pharmacy service provided to the W&C SBU provided by rotational pharmacists.
• To provide specialist in-house teaching relating to the specialty to pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.
• Responsible for reviewing and writing procedures and policies relating to the relevant SBU related to medicines.
• Post holder may be required to tutor a pharmacist undertaking the Post Graduate Diploma in Pharmacy Practice.
• Post holder may be required to tutor a Pre-registration pharmacist as the need arises

Qualifications

- Master’s degree in pharmacy or equivalent and 1 year pre- registration training
- Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (Great Britain) as attained following successful completion of 1 year competency assessment and Examination.
- Post-graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent

- Registered supplementary/independent non-medical prescriber
Knowledge

- Professional knowledge acquired through vocational Master’s degree in pharmacy (4 years) or equivalent
- Advanced level core therapeutic knowledge and clinical skills as gained through Post-graduate clinical diploma (or equivalent)
- Demonstrates high level of clinical knowledge, clinical reasoning and judgement; manages difficult and ambiguous problems
- Understanding of background to and aims of national and local healthcare policy/guidance and appreciate the implications of this on engagement and priorities
- Specialist clinical knowledge and skills relevant to the area of practice as developed through experience and CPD including conferences, courses etc.
- Demonstrable experience as a specialist practitioner in hospital clinical pharmacy
- Experience as an advanced level clinical pharmacist practitioner, able to demonstrate a high level of competency e.g. equivalent to achieving Excellence in the majority of competencies in all clusters within the Advanced Pharmacy Framework, except Management and R&D, which should be at Foundation level (as a minimum).
- Previous specialist clinical pharmacy experience in Women and Children specialties
- Variety of clinical practice within the women and children specialties
- Evidence of working effectively within multidisciplinary groups
- Previous experience of delivering training and education at post-graduate level
- Evidence of activity in clinical audit or drug use review to improve practice
- Current developments in pharmacy
- Changes occurring in the NHS
