Clinical Educator SACT

To assist with the coordination and effective delivery of the operational and day to day work of the SACT specialist education and clinical skills training service across the trust. Collaboratively with the other Educators deliver the planned UKONS SACT safe handling and administration training program including competency assessment and support. Assist on moving the SACT education service forward by identifying any clinical training needs and devising, developing and implement any policies, protocols and training material in line with changing legislation and evidence-based practice. We are a pleasant, approachable and proactive small team looking for the right person to compliment this ethos, whilst working closely with the Clinical Skills Training Team, Clinical Educators and Departmental Managers. This is a varied role, and would be of interest to someone who is organised, flexible and adaptable to changing needs of the service.

On a daily basis you would be expected to support staff clinically in both Oncology and Haematology areas of the trust in being able to deliver safe administration of SACT to our patients, sign off on the theory and practical elements of the UKONS digital SACT safe handling and administration competency passport, assist on the inhouse SACT study days and support associated higher academic module delivery through teaching and assessments.

You would be accountable to Specialist Practice Educator SACT for identifying training gaps, raising areas of priority, and supporting documents and policies to a range of clinical staff across professions, in large/smalls groups and/or on a 1:1 basis.

You would need to maintain and develop own knowledge, skills and competence in relation to clinical practice and clinical skills training to be able to be a subject matter expert, and offer advice and guidance to staff in relation to SACT education and clinical skills training.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 
PROFESSIONAL/COMMUNICATION

1.     Demonstrate a pleasant, approachable and proactive manner to create and promote a good working relationship amongst the Clinical Skills Training Team, within the School of Oncology and Clinical Educators in clinical divisions.

2.  Adhere to uniform policy to maintain a professional appearance.

3.     Work autonomously managing own workload in designated clinical areas to maintain SACT administration and clinical skills compliance.

4.     Work as part of a specialist SACT education team to facilitate planning, set up, delivery and resource monitoring for static UKONS SACT training sessions, and clinical support for practical SACT competency and associated clinical skills sign offs trust wide.

5.     Cross cover static clinical skills team training sessions during absence.

6.     Prioritise, plan and coordinate the delivery of the operational work of the team.  Liaise with the Specialist Practice Educator SACT and Clinical Skills Training Manager to ensure that training issues are addressed and to assist in informing overall strategic delivery of the service and priorities.

7.     Be responsible for liaising with Department Managers and Clinical Educators to assess SACT training needs and monitor competencies. 

8.     Feedback to the relevant managing training team members ensuring the appropriate training service cover arrangements are in place e.g., during sickness or annual leave and be adaptable to ensure that the overall work of the team is carried out effectively.

9.     Attend and actively participate in departmental and Trust committees, providing reports and information relating to the work of SACT education and the clinical skills training team and feedback to managing members.

10.  Be aware of own limitations and that of others, seeking advice and guidance as required.

11.  Demonstrate effective written, verbal and nonverbal communication skills, with team colleagues, staff in designated clinical areas and other staff trust wide and externally, at all levels on a range of matters relating to SACT education and clinical skills training provision/developments.  

12.  Manage difficult conversations with staff in designated clinical areas maintaining confidentiality at all times and escalate to senior colleagues as appropriate.

13.  Demonstrate effective use of Microsoft word, excel and outlook IT packages – adhering to trust and IT governance policies at all times.

14.  Demonstrate a professional and keen interest in the overall work of the School of Oncology.

 

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

1.   Be accountable to Specialist Practice Educator SACT   for identifying training gaps, raising areas of priority, and develop and deliver on the UKONS SACT and clinical skills training programmes and supporting documents and policies to a range of clinical staff across professions, in large/smalls groups and/or on a 1:1 basis.
 
2.   Adapt delivery of SACT and clinical skills training dependent upon assessment of current level of knowledge, skills and experience of the learner.
3.   Devise, develop and review training materials, presentations and policies under the direction of the Specialist Practice Educator SACT and Clinical Skills Training Manager.
4.   Maintain and develop own knowledge, skills and competence in relation to clinical practice and clinical skills training. Proactively engage in annual appraisal with line manager.
5.   Assess the theoretical and practical clinical skills competencies of clinical staff for UKONS SACT assessment framework. Feedback areas of concern to managing colleagues and/or departmental managers.
6.   Support the delivery and assessment of the SACT and Cancer Care University Modules including formative assignment marking and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) for students.
7.   Ensure own essential training is maintained.
 
SERVICE IMPROVEMENT AND QUALITY

1.    Be accountable to the Specialist Practice Educator SACT and Clinical Skills Training Manager when assisting on the design, operational collation of data, evaluation, report writing and presentation of results for audits relevant to the work of the School of Oncology.
2.    Be responsible to the Specialist Practice Educator SACT and Clinical Skills Team Manager when handling the investigation of clinical incidents relevant to the work of the School of Oncology.
3.    Ensure the collating and maintaining of training and development records in designated clinical areas are accurate and updated in a timely manner.
4.    Be accountable to the Specialist Practice Educator SACT and Clinical Skills Training Manager to identify, devise, develop and implement new SACT and associated clinical skills training initiatives and educational pathways, ensuring practice is evidence based and adheres to trust standards and policies.
5.    With clinical education teams, establish competency standards to ensure the agreed standard of care is maintained.
6.    Supervise the professional work of staff and students requiring SACT and clinical skills training reporting any concerns to clinical managers.
7.    Advise and support staff in relation to SACT education and clinical skills training.
8.    Train, standardise and monitor Clinical Skills Link Workers and UKONS Assessors to ensure training and assessment is carried out to agreed standards, offering guidance and support.
9.    Be accountable for evaluating SACT and clinical skills training provision, identifying skills gaps and take action to address these to ensure continued improvements, standardisation of training, including the standardisation of link assessors and quality of UKONS SACT and clinical skills training provision in clinical areas.
10. Consider opportunities for income generation in relation to SACT and clinical skills training provision and offer ideas in this regard to senior colleagues.
11. Take reasonable care of own health and safety as per trust policy. 
12. Work with Specialist Practice Educator and Clinical Skills Training Manager and subject matter experts to provide guidance and support to clinical managers in procuring clinical skills equipment and ensuring the best use of resources.
13. Together with Specialist Practice Educators, Senior Clinical Educators, and Clinical Skills Training Manager assist on the trial of relevant clinical skills equipment, its evaluation, reporting and procurement. 
14. Report all accidents, incidents and near misses in relation to own sphere of work and/or defects in equipment as per trust policies and communicate as required with departmental managers and line manager.

 

OTHER

1.     Be responsible for ensuring that personal corporate essential training requirements, as dictated by the trust, are met in a timely manner.

2.     Be responsible for booking an appointment and completing preparation work for annual PDR appraisal. Engage in the PDR process and take responsibility for drafting a summary of the discussion and objectives.

3.     Support the department, division and Trust and at times undertake other activities to ensure the smooth running of the School of Oncology and the Trust.
