The Inpatient Services Directorate have an exciting opportunity for an inspirational and supportive nurse leader to join the current team of Senior Sisters that lead the Divisional clinical areas.  The current team of band 7’s work closely together and collaborate on continuous quality improvement.

You will be working in a very supportive environment whilst having the opportunity to continue to look for opportunities to develop nursing practice.

You will need to have the ability to deal with challenging situations in a fast paced environment in a professional and calm manner.

  • To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality evidence-based care to patients.

  • To advocate for patients and exercise clinical judgement about patients’ needs in terms of plans and long term goals.

  • To communicate openly with the team at safety huddles, cascading important information that impacts the team / patient care.

  • To participate fully in the day to day running of the ward.

  • You would be responsible for supporting the senior sister in the management of the clinical area and supporting junior staff.

  • Ensuring the ward is safely staffed, complete return to work interviews, supporting junior staff to develop their skills and confidence in caring for patients.

  • You will be responsible for a small group of staff of your own which you will take charge and ensure their annual professional development review is completed and their essential training is up to date.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 
MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION
  1. Provide management support for staff and act as preceptor  to designated staff
  1. To lead the Ward acute oncology services. Review and implement change to the acute oncology service to support ongoing improvements in clinical practice reflecting capacity and demand issues
  1. To liaise with the patient flow team, ambulatory care and the hotline team to ensure optimal bed usage
  1. Liaise with discharge team/Senior Sisters for optimal bed usage involving ward transfers
  1. Close collaboration with medical staff to ensure realistic and efficient bed usage
  1. Assess, plan and implement clinical care and maintain associated patient records
  1. To organise daily work schedule and off duty rotas ensuring appropriate and effective skill mix and deployment of staff for appropriate patient needs
  1.  To assist in maintaining the staff and non-staff budget within agreed limits.
  1. Collaborate with other service providers in ensuring the highest possible standards of cleanliness and nutrition are achieved.
  1. Be aware of Health and Safety issues and ensure relevant risk assessments are undertaken.
  1. Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy, investigating speedily and compassionately
  1. Ensure all Trust policies and procedures are adhered to and new ones implemented as necessary
  1. To ensure all team members adhere to the uniform policy and maintain professional image for the unit
  1. Report to Lead Nurse on patient affairs/activity and staff development.
  1. Support those senior staff acting as appraisers to ensure they have a meaningful and achievable appraisal
  1. Ensure each designated staff member participates in a personal development plan and act to maximise the potential of others
  1. Assist/lead in the recruitment process for the unit
  1. Take a progressive approach to the management of short and long-term sickness/absence in collaboration with the Matron/Service Manager and Human Resources
  1. Take appropriate action in relation to any disciplinary matter when the need arises and follow procedures as laid down by the Trust.
  1. Supervise the requisition of stocks and equipment with care and economy
  1. Act up as required

TRAINING & EDUCATION

  1. To be up to date in all IV training programs including annual updates and competent in all areas of clinical practice
  1. Ensure all staff have an appropriate level of training and are offered relevant support
  1. Present at training days and at conferences
  1. Initiate and undertake research and audit which will influence practice
  1. Be up to date and competent with other clinical skills such as performing ECG’s, basic life support and intermediate life support.
  1. Attend all mandatory study days and ensure attendance of all staff

PROFESSIONAL

  1. Have expert knowledge and be able to advise and support nursing staff within trust & externally regarding emergency admissions and associated issues
  1. Liaise closely with the medical team and other members of the MDT in respect of patient care promoting the highest standard of care
  1. Participate in the on call rota for hospital cover out of hours

4.     Represent the unit at the Band 7 forum.

  1. To highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and undertake relevant projects
  1. Keep abreast of issues influencing the Trust both internally and externally and ensure senior colleagues and the team have a good understanding of the same
  1. Participate in policy writing for the unit and Trust
  1. Be fully aware of the divisional objectives and the Trust’s corporate plan
