We are looking for a highly motivated individual with extensive clinical experience in an acute/critical care environment to join our highly committed and friendly team of Night Nurse Practitioners and form part of the Clinical Site Team out of hours. You will be able to work autonomously to deliver specialist advice and care in relation to the acutely deteriorating patient and provide senior nursing leadership and the highest standards of care across the hospital at night.

The Night Nurse Practitioner role is a busy and rapidly paced one, working in partnership with the Clinical Site Manager and the multidisciplinary teams, delivering the highest standards of clinical care and extended skills to our patients across the Trust.

This is a dual role. You will be working clinically as a Rapid Response nurse, providing specialist and expert care to the acutely unwell patient, alongside an operational leadership role supporting the Clinical Site Manager and the multidisciplinary teams in the safe management of the hospital at night, including managing timely and effective flow and support to wards and departments.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Night Nurse Practitioner (NNP) is to provide an extended role of the nursing service at night to improve the care of inpatients.

The NNP will identify acutely ill patients and provide an advanced nursing assessment, initiating first line treatments, investigations and prescribed medications within agreed written protocols, guidelines and group directives.

The NNP will plan and implement care; work as part of the Rapid Response Team and facilitate early medical intervention when required.

 

The NNP will facilitate, in partnership with the ward nurses, the smooth running of the wards and hospital paying particular attention to the needs of patients at night. They will support the Clinical Site Manager (CSM) to aid patient flow across the site in order to support achieving improved patient experience and both National and Local Targets.

 

The NNP will act as a role model and will lead, develop and evaluate training and education for nurses and students at night, establishing a suitable environment and culture to enhance practice development. They will be responsible for managing risk in their area of control in accordance with the Trust risk policies and arrangements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·      To work as part of the Hospital at Night Team and as Rapid Response at night.

 

·      To work within your scope of practice as identified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

 

·      To review patients at ward level at the request of nursing or medical staff and alter clinical therapy in line with Patient Group Directives and Nurse Prescribing and accurately document in patients’ medical notes.

·      To act as first line bleep holder and screen all ward based requests for medical advice/intervention. Prioritise requests and intervene as appropriate within level of competence.

·      Provide first response to all ward based enquiries and requests for support. Prioritise requests and intervene as appropriate.

·      Screen patients and undertake/request appropriate investigations before referring to medical Team.

·      To provide support to junior nurses and doctors in clinical emergencies. Prioritise and manage own workload according to need. In the absence of the Clinical Site Manager full fill the role of bed manager/and Clinical Site Manager at night including break cover.

·       Participate in the initial investigation of complaints, addressing as required and communicating with appropriate persons.

·       Maintain control of the systems of communication on night duty, ensuring free flow of information between all nursing and medical staff.

 

·       Utilise manpower and other resources sensibly and cost effectively, in order to meet the patient needs and workload across the hospital, recording and reporting deficiencies to the Clinical Site Manager.

 

·       To take an active role in the development of innovative nursing practice and develop research based practice at night.

 

·       Participate in developing new protocols, guidelines and care pathways with the multi-disciplinary team. To mentor new team members by providing professional support

·       To facilitate the training of nurses, provide supervised clinical practice towards achieving competency in line with the Practice Development Team.

Person specification

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • RN registered with NMC
  • Management or leadership qualification
  • Management or leadership qualification
  • Advanced Life Support provider.
Desirable criteria
  • Degree level patient assessment and history taking course or equivalent experience
  • Teaching qualification or equivalent experience
  • Paediatric Immediate Life Support provider.
  • Recognised Non-medical Independent Prescriber registered with NMC

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent acute nursing experience at senior nursing level above.
  • IV cannulation, phlebotomy and basic interpretation of blood results.
  • Basic ECG interpretation.
  • Recognition and management of acute emergencies
  • Management of non-invasive ventilation
  • Knowledge of National patient flow targets
