Job overview

The Thoracic Nurse Case manager team is looking for an experienced Nurse to join our friendly team of Nurse Practitioners. This is a progressive role starting at band 5 and on completion of a comprehensive training and development pathway you will automatically be promoted to band 6. The expected timeframe to undertake and complete relevant competencies is 6 months.

About the team. 
The thoracic nurse practitioners provide a pre-operative assessment service for patients undergoing Thoracic surgery and provide psychological support for patients diagnosed with cancer from pre-operative diagnosis. The nurse practitioners liaise closely with lung nurse specialists, Consultant surgeons, Anaesthetist and MDT teams across the regions to ensure quality care throughout the whole of the patients’ journey.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What you’ll do. 

•    Whilst you undertake your training as a band 5, you will undertake the History Taking and Physical Examination course and complete all relevant competencies along with speciality competencies in practice.
•    During the training process you will complete ECG competencies for reading results and be confident in this role when take charge in future leadership.
•    Once you are a fully competent band 6 Nurse Practitioner you will perform face to face and telephone assessments of patients who are due to have elective surgery, ensuring they are safe to proceed and optimised prior to surgery.

What we’re looking for.
The post holder will ideally have experience of supporting patients with Cardiovascular & Thoracic disease within primary or secondary care. They will need to be adaptable and flexible and work in varied environments across the organisation. You will require a flexible approach to working patterns and will be required to work to a rota. 

As a Nurse Practitioner within the Thoracic team you will be expected to have excellent communication skills, promote the delivery of a high standard of patient-centered care and work between organisational boundaries.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse on relevant part of the register
  • Evidence of on-going personal development
  • Degree qualification or relevant equivalent experience
  • Willingness to undertake History Taking and Physical Assessment course within 6 months
  • Willingness to undertake 50 Sign off and Thoracic competencies within 6 months
  • Working towards completing Local Training for ECG competency in the area within 6 months
Desirable criteria
  • Management Experience / Course
  • Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis course
  • Recognised teaching / mentorship qualification.

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post registration experience within a surgical setting
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service.
  • Understanding of personal accountability
Desirable criteria
  • Significant post registration experience within a surgical setting.
  • Evidence of clinical leadership and managerial ability
  • Broad range of post registration experience including within a preoperative assessment setting.
  • Worked autonomously in previous clinical roles
