Job overview

We have exciting opportunities for nurses to join our low secure mental health services, here at Clifton House in York. Working with patients in either assessment and treatment or rehabilitation, we would welcome your skills and experience as part of our multidisciplinary team, where staff wellbeing is a valued priority. You will have excellent communication skills, be self-assured, emotionally resilient and adaptable to patient needs. Maintaining clear boundaries and consistencies within the team, you will work closely with and be guided by the wider MDT. 

You will be offered support and supervision in order to ensure safe and effective nursing practice and will gain an understanding of the Mental Health Act and the criminal justice system. You will be closely involved in developing recovery care pathways for patients alongside their families and carers and will empower them at all stages of care and treatment.

Main duties of the job

You will work as a staff nurse on a low secure forensic hospital ward, providing quality mental health nursing care to service users with severe and enduring mental health conditions.
You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing assessment and treatment and rehabilitative support including nursing and therapeutic interventions.
You will undertake the role of primary nurse and be responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for a designated group of service users.
You will understand and work within the framework of the Mental Health Act, and employ robust risk assessment and risk management skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

•    To undertake the role of primary nurse for a designated group of service users and be responsible for the assessment of care needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for that group of service users.
•    To provide clinical leadership, supervising, supporting and appraising junior members of staff including healthcare support workers and students as required.
•    To undertake the role of shift co-ordinator or security nurse within the unit as required, ensuring the implementation of agreed care plans, high quality nursing care and evidence based practice within the clinical service area.
•    To undertake the role of care co-ordinator to individual service users, providing, in conjunction with the MDT, specialist packages of care for service users with a history of offending behaviour linked to their mental disorder
•    To facilitate comprehensive risk assessment and management plans using the HCR-20 and develop treatment and recovery plans for service users within a secure environment 
•    To maintain clear and accurate clinical/medication records whilst ensuring their practice complies with the Mental Health Act, Code of Practice, the NMC Professional Code of Conduct, and the policies and procedures of Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust (LYPFT) 
•    To demonstrate clinical leadership to all staff and will deputise to the charge nurse as required
