Band 4 Children’s Healthcare Support Worker working across the four special needs schools in Reading, West Berkshire and Wokingham

Interviews will be held on 9th August 2024

This role will mainly be to provide 1:1 health care and support to an identified group of children who have complex health and/ or nursing needs at either The Avenue, Brookfields, Castle or Addington schools. The role is for 3 days per week term-time only (39 weeks/year). The successful candidate will have any of the following qualifications: NNEB/CACHE dip Nursery Nursing or BTEC National Diploma  or  have experience of working with children, young people or adults who have complex health needs and have a learning difficulty/disability.

This is a varied role where you will be working together with your line manager and colleagues to ensure that the activities of this post make a real difference to children and young people. Your line manager may ask you to undertake other reasonable duties to facilitate the smooth running of the service or team.

  • Your role will be to provide one to one health/nursing care to an identified group of children or young people with complex health needs within the four special schools as named above.
  • You will form an integral part of the fantastic and dedicated Specialist School and Community Children’s nursing team.
  • You will implement care plans in partnership with the child/young person, family, Specialist School nursing team and specialist input from the Practice Development nurse
  • You will undertake clinical nursing procedures specifically related to each individual child/young person’s complex health needs in line with achievement of relevant competency based training. This may include children and young people with gastrostomies, epilepsy, tracheostomies and those who require ventilation via a tracheostomy
  • You will be expected to work in a flexible manner with other team members to ensure that care is delivered at the required times. This may mean going to any of the four special needs schools outlined above or supporting the Community Children’s Nursing team.
  • You will actively participate in the development of the team/service and have a positive team spirit.
  • You will report to the Senior Nurse any untoward occurrences and incidents, in accordance with Trust policy and record promptly and accurately.
  • You will have an understanding and knowledge of safeguarding children inclusive of the BHFT policy and take appropriate steps in line with the policy where concerns are identified.
