West London NHS Trust  provides a full range of mental health, community  and physical healthcare services for children, adults and older people living in the London boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow.

We also provide some specialist services that are commissioned regionally, such as our medium secure services; and nationally, such as the Cassel Hospital for people with complex and severe personality disorder and our high secure services at Broadmoor Hospital.

The HBPoS provides a place of safety for those detained under S135 and S136 of the Mental Health Act. The service provides a safe place for those detained to be assessed by the HBPoS team, S12 approved doctors and AMHP. The post holder will provide care, support and assessments of all clients who enter the HBPoS.

The HBPoS is a nursing led service which provides intensive support, treatment and care for up to 24 hours for people who are deemed to be experiencing a mental health crisis.

We aim to maintain excellent interpersonal relationships with both internal and external parties to ensure we provide comprehensive and holistic care to our service users in the short amount of time we have.

·       To accept S136/S135 paperwork from police/AMHP and ensure all information is accurate and that you have received a comprehensive handover.

·       To provide holistic nursing care to clients including physical assessments, risk assessments, mental state assessments, intensive interventions to highly distressed individuals and complete relevant assessment tools.

·       To gather collateral information on clients from GP, community teams, liaison with other trusts and family and friends if possible.

·       Appropriately manage highly emotional, verbally aggressive, abusive or threatening clients and defuse such situations when appropriate, often under difficult and hostile circumstances.

·       Provide guidance and support to junior members of staff.

·       Support with quality improvement in the service

·       To make decisions autonomously to improve patient care and experience and maintain safety

As a HBPoS nurse you are responsible for the care and safety of all service users who come into contact with our service and for the staff whom work alongside you.

You will maintain excellent interpersonal relationships with internal and external parties, including but not limited to: NHS 111, police, AMHP service, EDT, medical team, GP service, A&E/liaison, community mental health teams, crisis teams and SPA/bed management (internal and external).

You will carry out and support your team to carry out mental state examinations, physical health assessments, comprehensive risk assessments and de-escalation interventions.

A major aspect of this role is ensuring the correct S136 process has been followed, including prior to the service user’s arrival and whilst they are receiving care in the service and ensuring the correct escalation process is followed where necessary

  • Mentorship qualification.
  • Evidence of post registration further development

  • Qualification in psychosocial interventions in mental health.
  • KUF training.

Experience

  • Post qualification experience to include appropriate experience within an acute mental health care setting and / or significant experience within community, crisis care, or liaison psychiatry.
  • Experience of working with other professions within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • To understand and have experience of risk management.

  • Experience of mentoring students.
  • Experience of Psychiatric Liaison services.
  • Experience of Crisis Team services.

Knowledge/skills

  • A high level of both written and spoken English language.
  • Knowledge of relevant mental health law.
  • IT literate – specifically in the MS office suite of programmes.

  • Knowledge of RiO patient record system.
  • Excellent communication skills including common courtesy and listening skills
  • Accredited training in customer service.
