Job overview

We are looking for a 3 Band 6 Senior Theatre Practitioners to support the senior leadership team in Constable Theatres new surgical service. 

This is a great development opportunity to enhance your leadership skills, be integral in the running of the department and will have the opportunity to support with innovation. This post is integral to the effectiveness of Constable Theatres elective surgical  

The New Constable Theatres template will provide Elective surgery in 3 of our operating theatres, The department will covers a range of specialties ranging from, Colo-rectal, Urology, Breast, General surgery, Gynae, Robotic and laparoscopic surgery. 

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to develop truly patient centred evidence based care through their clinical expertise and knowledge and through demonstrating the leadership skills to deliver and maintain best practice.

  • Be responsible and organise the effective planning of an elective list.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 2 years post registration performing as a Theatre Practitioner.
  • Evidence of attending and applying into practice training related to a theatre speciality
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of service development or improvement project

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current registration of professional body
  • Advanced scrub competencies or/and Qualified Surgical First Assistant And/or Cell Salvage operator And/or Specialist knowledge in an additional / equivalent specialty field or working towards

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of ongoing performance as a senior Theatre Practitioner role
  • Ability to provide highly specialist clinical & technical services transferable to external locations
  • Understand the principles of Agenda for Change and to undertake junior staff’s development via the appraisal process and deliver appropriate advice to qualified staff on a range of peri-operative specialist subjects
Desirable criteria
  • Formal Leadership and Management course undertaken or working towards
  • Good understanding of competency based learning
  • Appraisal Course completed or working towards

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills underpinned by leadership and inter - transferable across disciplines
  • The ability to prioritise with multifaceted complex situations and use developed physical skills to work at speed and with precision in emergency situations e.g. Cardiac Arrest, Code Blue / Red
  • Responsible for the safe use of expensive / highly complex equipment e.g Lasers, Cell salvage, ventilators, endoscopes
  • Application of skills to ensure sterility, asepsis, infection control and prevention of ‘Never Events’ such as patient retained instruments
  • If applicable to preferred area of practice, form an integral part of the inter-hospital transfer team, supporting the transfer of Critically ill patients either by road or air
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in these situations across both surgical and Anaesthetics
  • Sound knowledge and application of national & local theatre policies and procedures

Essential criteria
  • Professional and innovative role model with a proven ability to inspire and motivate others
  • Good levels of physical fitness, sufficient to safely position patients correctly for surgery, moving heavy equipment, standing for long periods
  • Able to exert on going light physical effort requiring concentration for long period’s throughout the shift. Occasional requirement to exert intense physical effort for short periods of time e.g supporting sedated patients, holding surgical retractors, attending cardiac arrests in non clinical locations
  • Able to work effectively in an unpredictable and demanding environment including dealing with frequent interruptions
  • Personal ability to work with the hazards in Operating Theatres which can be considerable and include bodily fluids, radiation, anaesthetic gas, bone cement, sharps and ensure the safety of those around you.
