Main duties of the job

G3 Ward at Southampton Children's Hospital has exciting opportunities for highly motivated, dedicated registered nurses to work as part of the management team at band 6 level.  

We are looking for nurses with leadership experiance as well as enthusiasm to support our junior staff in further development  opportunities. 

G3 is a 16 bedded unit including 4 HDU beds and speciliases in the care of children and young people from birth to 18. G3 is for patients who are undergoing orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation, specialist spinal surgery and major trauma patients.  As well as specialising in orthopeadic cases the ward supports the children's hospital with medical patients particularly over the winter months.  The ward takes patients from across the Wessex network as well as from the Channel Islands and is part of the UHS Paediatric Trauma Centre, the only one on the south coast.

Training to support specialist skills will be provided.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What you’ll do

Be responsible for assisting the Senior Sister in the management of the ward/unit over a 24-hour period, ensuring high standards of care appropriate to the child/young person are maintained, and available resources are utilised effectively. 

Support in the development and attendance of a group of staff, utilising the MDT and supporting meetings, audits and communication. 

To demonstrate clinical expertise, acting as a role model within Paediatric Setting.

What we’re looking for
 
•    Have post qualifying experience in a relevant specialty which includes working in an acute paediatric environment.  
•    The applicant will be expected to show good co-ordination and leadership skills 
•    Participate in ward rounds 
•    Attend HUDDLE’s 
•    Support staff wellbeing and clinical skills

The flexibility to work the full range of shift patterns within a 24 hour shift pattern is essential.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
  • Ward management experience
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical decision making and judgement
  • Commitment to the post and Care Group responsibilities
  • Commitment to continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in handling adverse events and complaints
  • Appraisal skills
  • Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed
  • Some insight into budget management
