Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for a band 6 trainee nurse colposcopist uplifiting to band 7 on completion of accredititation. Once accredited, the expectation is that the post holder will undertake hysteroscopy training. The final grading will be Band 8a once both colposcopy and hysterscopy training are completed.
Main duties of the job
- Under the supervision of the Lead Medical and Lead Nurse Colposcopist/Hysteroscopist, manage a patient caseload, providing expert assessment, evaluation and treatment within Colposcopist/Hysteroscopist care.
- Under the supervision of the Lead Medical and Lead Nurse Colposcopist/Hysterscopist, assess, diagnose and manage the care of women referred to the colposcopy/hysterscopy clinic and communicate these sensitively with patients where the outcome may be emotive.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To provide support to patients via telephone when required.
- Using Basic Counselling skills, empathy and sympthay to communicate to patients both face to face and over the telephone about complex and sensitive information.
- To attend a BSCCP recognised National colposcopy meeting at least once every 3 years.
- To attend a BSGE recognised National meeting at least once every 2 years.
- In collaboration with the Lead Medical and Lead Nurse Colposcopist/Hysteroscopist, participate in the continuing development of these specialist services. That includes patient centred evidence-based programmes of care and a continuous quality improvement programme.
- Participate in the development and implementation of the multi-professional standards and clinical protocols for Colposcopy/Hysteroscopy services

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Diploma or Degree in nursing
- NMC Registration/PIN
- Evidence of ongoing professional development within gynaecology
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant post-registration experience in gynaecology (recent)
- Basic Counselling skills
- Knowledge & understanding of related genito-urinary medicine & sexually transmitted infections
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
- Management of caseload
Desirable criteria
- Ability to work as a core member of the multidisciplinary team
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of the NHS Constitution & ‘Understanding the New NHS’
- Knowledge of current issues in the profession and practice of nursing
- Knowledge of management models, implementing change, and/or new clinical practices
- Listening/counselling skills
- Dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment (speculum, microscope, injections) and documentation
- To be aware and adhere to rules of confidentiality regarding patient data
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Colposcopy and the NHS Cervical Screening Programme
- Knowledge and understanding of evidence based practice, clinical effectiveness, research and audit
- Proficient IT skills

- Willingness to maintain BSCCP accreditation and CPD required to ensure this can be achieved
