Are you a passionate and dedicated healthcare assistant looking for a new adventure? Do you want to be part of our growing team at an exciting time? We are recruiting Healthcare Assistants to join our dynamic and forward-thinking team at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
Children’s Services is currently going through a transformational change with the merging of nursing teams across the Paediatric Emergency Department and the Children and Young People’s Unit.
Children’s Emergency Department (ED)
Children’s ED is a busy department who currently see large volumes of children every year in an area specifically dedicated to children. Children who are attending with urgent care complaints are streamed straight to this area.
Children’s Clinical Decision Area (CCDA) and Short Stay
The Children’s Decision Area sees children referred from GPs, children with direct access and children sent from ED requiring a further assessment. The short stay area is for children who require a prolonged period of observation but who are unlikely to need a full admission to hospital.
Main duties of the job
Ward 30 (Children’s Inpatient Unit)
Ward 30 is a Children’s Inpatient Unit that was purpose built in 2016. The unit includes 35 inpatient beds, a two-bedded stabilisation area and an accessible bathroom with all the mod-cons including a bath that can be moved up and down. Each bed space also has state of the art bedside monitoring.
The successful candidate will be offered the opportunity to work across all areas with your preferred area being your main place of work.
A team of clinical skills educators will be on hand with a supportive and robust training package, including:
- Obtaining physiological observations
- Meeting the care needs of children
- Venepuncture & cannulation
- ECG monitoring
- Bladder scanning
- Blood glucose & ketone monitoring
- Urinalysis
- Care of a child with a tracheostomy
- Caring for children requiring long term ventilation

The successful applicant will need to have:
- A commitment to caring for sick children and their families.
- Commitment to continuing your own personal professional development.
- NVQ/QCF Diploma or Apprenticeship at Level 3 in Health & Social Care (applicants with a Level 2 in Health & Social Care will be considered but will be offered a Band 3 Trainee post and your starting salary will reflect this)
OR
- NVQ/QCF Diploma or Apprenticeship at Level 3 in a Child Care related course (applicants with a Level 2 in a Child Care related course will be considered but will be offered a Band 3 Trainee post and your starting salary will reflect this)

Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working as part of a team
- Experience, knowledge, and awareness of patient care need, e.g., patient monitoring
- Experience of dealing with members of the public
- Experience of working in a NHS/healthcare setting or equivalent.
- Experience of communicating professionally with others.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in a paediatric setting
Skills
Essential criteria
- Numeracy and literacy skills.
- Ability to organise and manage own workload.
- Basic IT skills.
Knowledge

- Ability, commitment, and aptitude to learn all elements of the healthcare assistant role

- QCF/NVQ Level 2 Health/Health and social care (or equivalent)
- QCF/NVQ Level 3 Health/Health and Social Care or QCF/NVQ Level 3 Child Care (or equivalent)*
