To work as a prime care provider in all aspects of midwifery care, specifically Maternity Enhanced Maternal Care.

To work flexibly within the team to provide 24 hour cover for maternity High Dependency Unit / EMC, with ability to provide cover for other areas of the service including antenatal/postnatal wards, and the wider trust, as required.  Motivation and interest in obstetric critical care is a prerequisite.  Rotation between day/night duties will be expected to ensure service provision.

The post holder will be required to:

  • Participate in the provision of enhanced maternal care (RCOA, 2018) utilising effective individualised, women-centred, evidence-based midwifery.
  • Maintain own professional practice, and development, in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2018)
  • Be skilled in recognising and caring for the critically ill obstetric woman, and assisting in the escalation of care needs
  • Work in partnership with women and their families, and the MDT to ensure holistic and evidence based care. 
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the care of mothers and babies in accordance with the Trust’s policies and guidelines, utilising the EMC knowledge.
  • Facilitate the learning of midwifery skills through supervision, teaching and support.
  • Strive to enhance the quality of care through evidence based care
  • The post holder will act as a role model and ensure that the EMC environment is maintained.

Leadership

Assist the ACP to develop the EMC team and disseminate knowledge to the midwifery and the wider trust.

Work in partnership with other staff members, ensuring high standards of care.

Support junior staff in EMC and throughout the wider trust to enable effective evidence based care for these women

Clinical Practice

Assist in escalation of care and respond to the needs of the sick woman, in collaboration with MDT.

Be able to undertake a comprehensive A to E physiological assessment

Assist in developing the service and be actively involved in audit, teaching and supporting junior colleagues

Proficient in the setting up and management of invasive lines / monitoring, including CVP, Arterial and PICC / midlines.

Understands the impact of critical illness and/or pregnancy related disease

Confident in the use of specified equipment in EMC setting, including the cardiac monitors and be proficient in training core labour ward staff

Understands rationale for medical, pharmaceutical and midwifery interventions and expected outcomes

Develop skills through clinical practice and post registration study

Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records at all times

Organisational and Professional Development:

Work within the procedures, policies and guidelines of the trust, and within their scope of practice

Attend mandatory training

Maintain professional and education skills related to EMC competency and embrace the extended role of the Midwife

Maintain professional portfolio

Implement a holistic pathway of care and encourage the use of the EMC patient leaflet 

 Communication

Demonstrate good communication skills, and maintain professionalism at all times to staff and patients

Demonstrate and respect cultural diversity

Maintain awareness and actively contribute to the Trust’s clinical governance agenda
