Job overview

The post holder will be responsible for the 24-hour management and clinical leadership of the midwifery services within Pannal Ward.

The post holder will be accountable for ensuring the highest standard of clinical care is provided on Pannal Ward. They will be easily identifiable to patients, providing strong, visible leadership and have the appropriate level of authority to provide support, advice and assistance required by women, their partners and families.

The post has a combination of clinical and management responsibilities. This includes in-patients for Antenatal and Postnatal care, also women admitted for Elective Caesarean Section and Induction of Labour. The post holder will be provide leadership in planning the lists for Elective Caesarean and admissions for Induction of Labour.

The post holder will have direct access to the Matron, and the Associate Director of Midwifery for advice and support and they will play an active part in the professional networks within the organisation.

The post holder is expected to participate in the senior midwife on call rota, providing support and advice to clinical staff out of hours.

The post holder must adhere to the NMC Code and any other relevant documents as published by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and must work within the policies and guidelines as laid down by the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection and retention of a team of qualified midwives, health care assistants, and Maternity support staff.
  • Delegated responsibility for staff and non- staff budget for the area
  • Line management responsibility for midwifery and Maternity support staff on the ward
  • In collaboration with Matron for Maternity services and the Lead Midwife for community services participate in practice and service developments, audit and benchmarking against agreed standards.
  • Have a vision for the area/service and be able to lead others and implement the vision in practice

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide designated leadership and management responsibility for the Antenatal and Postnatal ward
  • To provide the highest standard of holistic safe and effective care through the effective use of evidence based practice in line with agreed local and national standards to ensure constant Quality Improvement within the area.
  • Accountable for the planning and delivery of all aspects of patient care throughout the working period as set out in the NMC Code.
  • To provide a continuously improving service in line with the clinical governance framework, Trust objectives, and the NHS performance framework
  • To provide clinical leadership, expertise, advice and support to the midwifery and multi -professional team to facilitate the effective delivery of care to patients at all times.
  • To support and continually develop staff to ensure they have the appropriate level of skill, knowledge and competence to meet service/specialty requirements.
  • Provide specialist midwifery expertise, ensuring all staff are supported in their practice on day to day and ongoing basis with particular emphasis on antenatal care.
  • To ensure the assessment, development and evaluation of programmes of care in order to co-ordinate the holistic needs of women and their families. To be responsible for the organisation of midwifery care to meet these needs.
  • Uses advanced decision making skills to utilise all available resources to deliver highly complex individualised outpatient care effectively and efficiently in a timely manner.
  • Takes overall responsibility for acting on abnormal results. This includes communicating sensitive, complex information on abnormal test results, planning and delivering the follow up care.
  • To be Accountable for the leadership and development of the Maternity support Workers and in conjunction with the Practice development midwife ensure competency training needs and requirements are met
  • Facilitate Baby Friendly Accreditation of the unit with the midwifery and support team
  • To lead the Trust Ward accreditation
  • To be the Midwifery Lead for the Elective Caesarean Pathway 

Person specification

Education/Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife with current NMC Registration
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • Teaching qualification Mentor Preparation Course or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of post Graduate studies relating to midwifery care

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience as a qualified midwife with recent postnatal/ antenatal experience.
  • Clinical expert in the care of women and their families.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in complaints management
  • Evidence of broad midwifery experience
  • “Extended” midwifery skills; IV cannulation, NIPE course
