Liverpool University Dental Hospital provides dental care across all specialities through undergraduate, postgraduate and specialist service activity.

Applications are invited for the post of Registered Dental Nurse within the Dental Hospital. Applicants must be registered with the General Dental Council and hold a recognised dental nurse qualification. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual with excellent clinical and communication skills. 

Main duties of the job

To provide the highest quality of nursing care, to all staff and students within the trust.

Carry out the duties in such a way as to make a direct and positive contribution to the organisation.

The Dental Nurse will be expected to work with minimum of supervision, using their own initiative.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students during dental procedures

Recording of treatment and other associated clerical work.

Preparation of filling materials, impression materials, instruments, equipment, dressings and syringes.

Ensuring the treatment area is clean and tidy, adhering to infection prevention and control procedures.

Clearing away used instruments and materials at the end of treatment

Assisting with medical emergencies in line with GDC scope of practice

Assisting clinics with investigations e.g. x-ray procedures, blood tests and bacteriological tests.

Receiving patients attending for emergency treatment and triaging as appropriate

Providing the patient with pre- and post-operative instructions and ensuring that the instructions are fully understood.

Care and minor maintenance of equipment utilised within the dental environment

Assisting with all methods of treatment and surgical procedures and working in any area of the hospital when necessary,

Communicating with other departments within the Hospital when necessary, ensuring that follow-up treatment is arranged.

Maintaining stock, clearing cupboards and checking expiry dates on bottles and re-ordering stock as necessary.

The post holder shall, as necessary, provide cover for and undertake duties of absent colleagues

The post holder shall follow all the policies and procedures of the organisation

  • Excellent interpersonal oral and written skills

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registrable Dental Nurse qualification or NVQ Level III in Oral Healthcare
  • Must be registered with the General Dental Council as a Dental Care Professional
  • Evidence of maintenance/updated relevant Continued Professional Development
Desirable criteria
  • Post qualification certificate(s), eg Radiology, Sedation, Orthodontics, Oral Health
  • Further qualifications in basic first aid, health & safety, manual handling

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable recent experience of working as part of a dental team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in a hospital setting

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Interest in oral health promotion
  • Up to date knowledge of the NHS as it relates to dentistry
  • Knowledge of new strategies in dentistry
