Job overview

Do you have lived experience of accessing Childrens' Social Care services and/or Health and Justice Services? This could include lived experience of the criminal justice system and/or lived experience of being in Care (e.g. foster care, residential care). Do you want to use your experiences to help others and influence change? if so, this is the opportunity for you!

We are looking for people with this lived experience (either directly or as a parent/carer) to join our award-winning Children and Young People (CYP) Peer Support Team. Peer Support Workers (PSWS) work with young people (CYP) and/or their parent/carers, open to CYP Mental Health Services, building mutual, strength-based relationships to promote hope for the future.

You will be supported to draw from your personal insights and experiences of social care/health and justice services to help develop/deliver trauma-informed training across a wide range of professional settings. This role will also involve working closely with partner organisations/teams across Lincolnshire County Council (e.g. Future4Me), therefore it's important to have excellent communication skills and work creatively and collaboratively to help improve services for vulnerable young people.  

You will need to travel independently across the county without reliance on public transport.

Main duties of the job

  • Model principles of hope, recovery, and self-belief in all aspects of work with young people, families, and other professionals.
  • Share coping, self-help and self-management techniques with young people, carers, and other professionals in an appropriate and supportive manner, whilst working within appropriate guidance.
  • Demonstrate insight into how life experiences have impacted on own wellbeing and personal development, using this to support others and support professional/organisational learning.
  • Draw upon own coping skills to sustain wellbeing in the role, as well as seek help and support where necessary.
  • Form and maintain appropriate therapeutic relationships with children, young people, and families
  • Analyse information provided by young people and families, provide support, and explore solutions for presenting problems.
  • Liaise with representatives from universal and other specialist services, as appropriate, and demonstrate good communication between services.
  • Identify and contribute to the development of peer support opportunities amongst young people and/or their parent/carers.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of workshops and/professional training, offering lived experience perspective and input.
  • Demonstrate/possess excellent IT skills to ensure that able to manage diary/commitments, complete accurate case recording and complete daily tasks.
  • Demonstrate good time management and organisational skills, and an ability to plan and prioritise workload.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To support young people and/or parent/carer engagement in relevant health services and support them to identify and meet recovery and/or personalised goals.
  • Support young people or parent/carers to access community supports or other meaningful activity to promote positive emotional and social development.
  • Support young people and parent/carers who may be struggling with transitions out of, or across, relevant service whilst drawing appropriately from their own lived experience.
  • Support young people and parent/carers to reflect on their own wellbeing needs, completing wellness plans with them, as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of workshops and trauma-informed professional training to a range of different settings, offering a lived experience perspective/input.
  • Attending and contributing to a range of professional and/or multi-disciplinary meetings.
  • Contribute to the development of service user involvement and participation across CYP Services within LPFT.
  • Responsible for being aware of, and implementing Trust policies, including safeguarding policies and lone working policies.
  • Responsible for safe use of clinical equipment.
  • Participate in their own individual and group supervision, identifying their own development and training needs.
  • Responsible for ensuring that any mandatory training is completed and updated for themselves and those they supervise and support.
  • Attending training that will increase competency and knowledge of the role, including peer support training.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information at all times and ensure accurate record-keeping in accordance with Trust Policy.
  • Recording and updating patient information within the young person’s clinical/health notes in a range of different patient care record systems
  • Manage own information systems and share information appropriately throughout the organisation.
  • Required to be involved in ongoing LPFT service development.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Satisfactory level of Secondary education to GCSE English A-C grade or 9-4 grade or equivalent (may be working toward this).
  • Demonstrate a good standard of English and good verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to undertake further training relevant to role (e.g., peer support worker training).
Desirable criteria
  • Level of education to NVQ 3/AS level or equivalent.
  • Mental Health or Health and Social Care related qualification.
  • Recovery college course qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Lived experience of accessing Childrens' Social Care services and/or Health and Justice Services, either directly or as a parent/carer.
  • Experience of being in a role supporting or mentoring others.
  • Experience of working in a team or group environment
  • Ability to recognise and manage own stress/wellbeing needs and use a range of self-management or recovery tools/techniques.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with children, young people, and families
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Lived experience of being Care experienced or having contact with the youth offending and/or the criminal justice system.
  • Experiencing of working with a range of different organisations.
