Job overview

The post holder will undertake the role as Named Midwife for Safeguarding in accordance with the role and competencies outlined in the RCPCH Intercollegiate Guidance (2019)

The post holder will be a highly visible senior midwife who is able to provide specialist safeguarding knowledge and advice to staff in Maternity services and across the Trust

The post holder will work collaboratively with all Trust services and partner agencies as required including those out of area to ensure that pregnant women, their babies and families who access maternity services are safeguarded and their welfare is promoted.

Ensure that there are robust safeguarding supervision processes in place for maternity services and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the Trust response to all Safeguarding Reviews for children, adults and Domestic Homicide Reviews and to ensure that learning is shared and recommendations are implemented and audited.

To act as a Trust lead for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

To ensure that Child Death reporting and reviewing processes are embedded across Maternity services

To develop safeguarding systems, processes and policies across maternity services and quality assurance measures to demonstrate compliance with statutory safeguarding duties and to monitor and evaluate to reduce risks to infants

To attend Trust meetings, preparing and presenting papers and reports as required.

To identify and support safeguarding training across maternity services and across the Trust to ensure that staff have the required knowledge and skills for their role.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Post-registration Safeguarding Training/Qualification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience of working in a safeguarding role including experience of working with vulnerable women with complex medical and social needs
  • Knowledge of key practice areas for safeguarding children in Maternity services including FGM and Domestic Abuse
  • Experience of implementing Safeguarding evidence based practice
  • Experience of multi-agency/partnership working at practice and operational level
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of providing Safeguarding Supervision

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate extensive understanding of safeguarding principles and their application to practice
  • Proven ability to achieve targets and objectives within a demanding and pressured environment against challenging deadlines.
  • Receive and communicate information relating to safeguarding and patient safety, which may impact on the Trust or on an organisation-wide basis
Desirable criteria
  • Involved in supporting projects/practice developments within maternity services
