Dorset County Hospital are delighted to be able to advertise this Staff Nurse position for our Paediatric Day Surgery Unit. Co-located on the main Paediatric Ward, DSU is a relatively small 5 trolley unit offering elective surgery to children and young people in Dorset. 

The successful candidate will be committed to delivering excellent surgical care to paediatric patients attending our Day Surgery Unit on our designated paediatric day surgery unit. They will be required to work with our existing day surgery team and be responsible for pre assessment,  admission, pre and post-operative care and discharge of the patients listed on our paediatric surgery sessions. Previous experience within a surgical setting is desirable.

The post holder will be expected to;

  • To be part of the nursing team on in the Paediatric Day Surgery Unit, working shift patterns to include mainly weekday elective theatre lists but with availability to cover some weekend for additional elective activity. In addition as required to be part of a wider flexible workforce across the Trust for departments providing Paediatric care.
  • Provide pre assessment, and pre and post operative care to children and young people covering a range of surgical specialties (including special care dentistry, maxilla facial, general surgery, Orthopaediacs , ENT, Ophthalmology)
  • To work as a member of the team providing specialist evidence based nursing care to children and their families within the Day Surgery Environment. Ensures that the child’s care is assessed, planned, implemented and evaluated utilising a Family centered approach to care. Be responsible for reviewing and updating nursing care plans and documentation
  • To work with the team to provide a child friendly service that is responsive, flexible and striving to deliver excellence. This includes reviewing standards and engaging families to ensure their voice is heard
  • Co-ordinate nursing activity on the ward or in one area of the unit on an occasional/regular basis. Responsible for ensuring that there are adequate staff levels and appropriate skill mix to meet the needs of the ward/unit. Ensure that staff are supported and that patient care is of a high standard.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Understanding of professional paediatric nursing issues.
  • Recent experience of working in an acute paediatric ward / day surgery environment

Skills & Abilities

  • Evidence of ability to maintain effective positive working relationships with colleagues, patients and visitors.
  • Evidence of ability to practice as an efficient practitioner (able to think independently)
  • Demonstrates clinical skills and the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care including prioritisation and recognition of the sick child.
  • Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality and required standards for documentation and records management both paper and electronic.
  • Evidence of understanding child protection.
