Are you an enthusiastic Band 5 or Band 6 nurse with an interest and passion for nutrition? We are recruiting a nurse to join our Nutrition Support team. You will be a senior staff nurse with previous experience caring for patients receiving artificial nutrition.
Training and support will be provided to enable you to develop skills and knowledge in nutrition support. The role requires commitment and enthusiasm in the speciality, an ability to deliver training, and an appetite to succeed and overcome challenges.
This post supports health care professionals in managing and troubleshooting issues related to artificial nutrition. Has responsibility for delivering training programmes to support ward based nutrition standards, and assessing compliance with tube feeding competencies to ensure safe practice. Joining our 2 Nutrition Nurses and Assistant practitioner you will work within the Nutrition Team.
*For the right candidate with suitable experience, there is potential for this to be a band 5 developmental post, and after completing agreed competencies progressing to a substantive band 6.
Main duties of the job
- To ensure a high standard of patient care is given in accordance with agreed policies and procedures
- Communicate and liaise with GP’s, hospital consultants, other healthcare professionals within Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and other Trusts within the UK as well as Nutrition Support Homecare Providers, as appropriate to provide a seamless service and to promote best practice
- Effectively manage a caseload of patients
- Build therapeutic relationships
- Recognise and respond to emergency situations
- Act as a resource for specialist advise ad education within the team and in the wider healthcare setting
- Self- motivated and able to work without direct supervision
- Provide support for team members when required & have the ability to work within a small multi professional team
- Participate in bi annual Nutrition Support meetings
- Participate in bi annual meetings between NST and pharmacy aseptic department
- Coordinate quarterly business meetings between NST and homecare providers as well as bi monthly meetings with nurse provider
- Attend quarterly MND MDT patient review meeting
- Represent the NST at the Trust ‘s Nutrition steering group
- Regularly liaise with the home enteral tube feeding members to provide a comprehensive high-quality service
Working for our organisation
Ours is a small multi professional team consisting of a Consultant Gastroenterologist, Nutrition nurse specialist, Nutrition Nurse, Assistant practitioner, Senior Dietitian, Pharmacist & pharmacy technician.
We are based on Level 8 Hutchings outpatient unit, working closely with the colorectal, stoma and outpatient teams to provide excellent standards of care and streamlining patient care.
Other vacancies are available within the department and a split role would be considered up to full-time hours

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Registered Nurse
- • Evidence of continuous Personal and professional Development
- • Experience with patients receiving nutrition support (parenteral &/or enteral nutrition)
- • Willingness to complete Independent prescriber course
Desirable criteria
- • Post Grad Diploma
- • Independent and supplementary prescriber
- • Post Registration Teaching qualification
- • Leadership experience/management training.
- • Post reg specialist qualification
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- • Minimum of 4 years post registration
- • Minimum of 2 years in a relevant specialist area (Gastroenterology/surgical nursing)
- • Skills and knowledge of caring for patients with intestinal failure &/or complex nutrition support management
- • Experience of working within a multi professional team
Desirable criteria
- • Previous employment as a Nutrition Nurse Specialist
- • Demonstrate ability to implement innovative evidence-based practice
