Plymouth Hospitals is a large acute trust in the Southwest of England, situated on the Devon and Cornwall border and provides perioperative care for elective and emergency patients across the region. The hospital is a designated Trauma Centre and tertiary referral centre for Neurological and Cardiac patients. The trust is a teaching hospital with close links to the Peninsula Medical School and the University of Plymouth.

The POD has 3 Theatres, which are situated on level 7 and 6 within Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. Specialities covered within the unit include Plastics, Maxillo-facial, Renal transplant, Dermatology and General Surgery.  A mixture of day case, in-patient, elective and emergency work is undertaken within the unit.

This vacancy is a full-time permanent position for a scrub practitioner with the theatre pod. The post comes with a commitment to work on call within our emergency team in level 4 theatres out of hours.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Provides high quality care to patients and their families during the perioperative period.
  • Act as Practitioner in charge, in the absence of the Team Leader ensuring efficient allocation of staff and resources.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical excellence and play an active role in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care.
  • To engage and interact with patients and their carers, explaining procedures and treatments to gain co-operation, understanding and allay apprehension.
  • Assist with projects to develop and enhance patient care.  Participate in the evaluation of patient outcomes, including audit, risk management and infection control.
  • Assists in other clinical areas and speciality theatres if the clinical situation and staffing levels demand.
  • Attend relevant meetings and deliver feedback.
  • To develop and achieve objectives identified through continuing appraisal of job role.
  • Demonstrating an awareness of and compliance with Health and Safety regulations/procedures that apply to staff, patients and visitors within the trust premises, reporting any deficiencies in equipment, furnishings or matters of hygiene.
  • Efficient and effective use of available resources.
  • In exceptional circumstances to take charge in the absence of senior staff.

  •  To provide leadership and act as a role model to junior colleagues and staff in training. 
  • Act as a Mentor/Facilitator to students and colleagues e.g. nursing, ODP, paramedic NVQ trainees and medical staff, participating in Induction programmes, guiding practice and assessing competencies to further develop staff.
  • To promote and enhance effective communication and working relationships to maintain a cohesive and effective team.  Take an active role to cascade information in Team Brief and departmental meetings.
  • Work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team to maintain effective communication and good team working to ensure that work is neither overlooked nor duplicated.
